Cab Lights

Rather than take a swing at trying it myself, I am getting the High Five cab lights (newr style) installed right now. Hope she comes out alright. Anyone have these and if so, have you upgraded the bulbs to LED or other options, or is that even necessary?

Thanks fellas, I will post a new pic this weekend. Trucks are just too darn much fun to accessorize.

Yeah, you'll love them. I'd be curious about the LED bulbs because it is a slight pain to replacing a bulb and LEDs last longer. The base does not mount separately from the lens, so if you remove the lens to replace the bulb, then you'll have to contend with aligning the entire assembly back to the roof, i.e., refinding the screw holes, that sort of thing.

I always threatened to mount the base via screws, but just never did it.

At any rate, I enjoy mine.

Talk about leaving a shop miffed. Not that it looks too bad at all, but I made it very clear when I handed them the keys where I wanted the lights to be, and even handed them a pic from the GM site, showing the lights on the outside of the OnStar antenna, well they put them a bit too close, and on the inside of the antenna, but offered to take it to a body shop and make it right. Not that I am too bothered by it, she still looks sharp, and on a half ton, the spread looks fine after I have gotten used to it. Needless to say the install and the lights were "no charge".

Well on the plus side it was free, on the downside it just plain sucks when shops don't listen to customers when they tell them what they want.

Any pics of the install? Where'd you get them from?

I'll take some pics this Friday. I have to get out the door in a half hour and take my wealthy cousin's racecar trailer over to Tacoma/Seattle and pick up a new Formula car...and it's a dirty truck right now, downpour yesterday. I'll get her cleaned up and take some pics, then try to figure out how to post them here. The lights aren't too bad, you are right, it's a matter of communication, and these fellas didn't listen to me. However I should have asked to see their intended mounting position prior to drilling into my roof. Having them take it to a shop to redo the holes is asking for trouble in my mind, the original finish would never be the same.

I just installed cab lights on my 98 ext-cab Z71. I bought the Hi Five light kit from JC Whitney and bought the style that is factory for this body style truck. I bought this kit over two years ago and it took me this long to get the courage up to drill holes in my roof.

Once I drilled the first hole, it was easy from there. I knew I couldn't stop until it was done. The only thing I used from the Hi five kit was the rubber bases, the screws, and a little bit of the wiring. I found a truck in the junkyard that had the cab lights but had been rolled. I took out the wiring harness and used it on mine. I bought all new GM lenses because I didn't like how the Hi Five ones were constructed.

The hardest part of the install was getting the wiring harness between the roof panel and the secondary panel and up through the holes I drilled for the bulb connectors. I pulled the bulb contact points out of the connector so I didn't have to drill such a big hole. I had to use a fishing wire to get each wire through the holes in the roof. It was pretty time consuming and frustrating.

Finally I got the lights installed and hooked up but when I turned them on, two of the lights didn't work. Turned out that I must have accidently put two bulbs from the wrecked truck in the lights and they were broken or burned out so I had to unscrew both lights and put new bulbs in.

I'm glad I finally got the courage to install the lights and I think they make the truck look much better, especially at night. Earlier in the year, I installed the endgate marker lights that go under the tailgate so now with the addition of the cab lights, my lighting is now complete.
