Taking hubby, the puppies, my truck and camper.  Will be staying at Artilliary Ridge Campgrounds.  Anybody ever been Gettysburg, PA?  Looking for suggestions as to what to see or what to avoid.  Hoping a reinactment will be going on, I'd love to see one of those!

I"m not sure about Gettysburg, but 2 weeks ago when I was down in TN, NC, VA, I saw a lot of advertisements about reinactments on the 4th.

I've never been there, but since it is just across the state from me, I know alot of people that have been there.  It's supposed to be a great historical place to visit, and there are still artifacts there that are unfound.  Many, many soldiers lost their lives there and I think there are reinactments going on all the time (especially the 4th of July).

About 3-4 years ago we made a trip out to DC and stopped in Gettysburg overnight on the way out.  It was by far the part of the trip I liked best.  Be sure to take a tour provided by the National Park Service (or whatever department it is) by an official tour guide.  They drive your car as they know where to go, and really know their stuff.  For the minimal price we paid it was well worth it, I believe it was 2.5-3 hours long.  When we were there an enactment was taking place (two days before July 4th).  We were going to go watch, but found out it was some outragous price per person, something like 20-25 bucks a head.  We watched for about 45 minutes from the other side of the road, and left after becoming bored with it.  I don't know if I'd plan a vacation around one of those.

   Should be nice.  My mom and dad went there once a few years ago, and really liked it, well, dad did at least.  :)

I love Civil War history.

Never been there, but it's on my list of places to go.

Dad loved it.  They bought a cassette when they got there that you play in your car as you drive through and it explains everything.  He said it was the perfe t way to go, because you could go at you own pace......and rewind what you didn't hear

Hey, my wife and I go to Gettysburg at least once a summer!   Lots of history and nice local flavor in the historic section of Gettysburg.  My wife enjoys shopping at all the little shops and after 6 or 7 trips we seem to find new things to do each time we go!  We always stay at the Battlfield Holiday Inn but there are alot of nice campsites.  4th of July will be a blast-lots of reinactments and services going on.  Do an internet search-the town has info online such as maps, dining etc.  Enjoy!

I am so EXCITED - Found out that on Sunday July 7 there will be reenactments which include a Victorian Ladies Side Saddle Rider Demonstration, The Custer's Calvary vs. Hampton's Calvary Battle and Picketts Charge which was the final battle at Gettysburg - 10,000 lives lost in 50 minutes during that one.  The tix are $25 per person which gets you a Grandstand seat on the 50 yard line!  Can't wait to see all those horseback riders reenact the calvary charge.  I'm absolutely psyched!  Made the decision to go on a whim, not realizing all that was actually happening during the July 4th week. Found alot on the internet.  Gettysburg Military Park, the Cemetary etc., So much to see, so little time.....Can't wait to go!

I live and work about 20 minutes from the center of Gettysburg!!  I grew up here my whole life (30 years) and used to work in Gettysburg.  Many of my friends live in Gettysburg. See where this is heading?! -- Ask away and I'll do my best to answer your questions.

For starters, do the guided tours.  There are quite a few: some where the guide goes with you, some where they give you a cassette tape and you drive yourself, and a cool double-decker bus tour with the top deck open (wear sunscreen! )  There will be numerous re-enactments over the 4th, so you shouldn't have trouble catching one.  Other neat things to see:  the Civil War wax museum, the Eisenhower farm, the "Ghosts of Gettysburg" tour (at night, of course! ), Devil's Den, Little Round Top, the Gettysburg Railroad -- the list goes on and on.  You will not have near enough time to do everything you want to!!  The best thing to do is to find a Visitor's Center (there are 3 or 4 of them on all sides of the town) and pick up info there.  I also recommend just walking through downtown -- the center of town and the town square are beautiful.

I don't check these boards much on the weekends, but keep your questions coming and I'll try to get you quick answers to them!
