low fuel millage

Chevy has been doing the same thing they have  done for years. They keep trying to shove smaller motors down our throats. My 89 Silverado I bought new it had the first EFI 350 I got 18 mpg running a/c, wind and most everything else. un less I broke 80 mph wonce I opened the back barrels then it plummeted. in 07 they put the 5.3 witch is the dreaded 327. lacks the power to pull a full size truck. so what did they do when the feds told them to get there mpg in alien with the claims on there sticker. So all the auto manufacturers put 5/30 oil in the engines less resistance. then Chevy lowered gear ratio witch gives it more power but lower mpg. so now if I keep it under 65 mph i get better mpg. I call Bullshi#.

Our 89 only got 9 mpg....but then again we had swapped a 454 into it. 

My 06 L33 5.3l has way more power than my 89 350 ever did before the 454 swap. Not sure what your talking about. Even my 99 Escalad, 5.7L Vortec engine, doesn't have the power that my 06 Silverado does. My 06 trailered my Dad's old 6.5L Diesel truck home when it lost a bearing without any trouble, and pulls my 7000# camper without issue. Gets great mileage too with the 3.42 gears.  Only revs 2000rpm down the freeway at 75.

I have the same set-up in my 05, L33 with 3.42 gears.  The L33 is a great engine, no it doesn't have the power and mpg's of the newer DI 5.3's, but none of the associated problems with the newer technology motors either. I can settle for 19 mpg flat land mileage and 17 mpg cross-country over the Rockies and Blue Ridge mtns. for the durability this package offers. Brian, your 06 is a keeper, use her hard when you need to, but baby her when you can and make her last, might be a parable in there somewhere, I dunno.

Oh yeah. She's got 310,000 on her now. Just gotta do the maintenance.

Well back in '89 we were breaking law if we went faster than 55 if I remember right.  We certainly weren't cruising around at 70+ like we do today.  Your LY5 makes about 100 more horsepower and has a flatter torque curve than your old SBC too.  Not sure why you dread your LY5, love mine which is an all aluminum sister to yours, an LC9.
