shift problems

hello,

not sure if this is the right forum or not? i have a 2008 yukon denali Xl 6.2 AWD so please let me know if i need to move this topic elsewhere and let me know where to find the appropriate forum.

yesterday i felt some resistance  in the column shifter and it happened suddenly. i only seem to feel the resistance from P to D only going past R and form D to P that same thing. when trying to get past R from D i have to pull really hard on the shifter towards me and it slips into P but with great persistence. seems really dry if you know what i mean?  has anyone experience the same thing? if so can anyone tell me where to start looking to fix the problem or what might potentially cause this Resistance?

is it possible a bearing or some kind of bushing in the column needs some grease? or perhaps it is something to do with the linkage to the trans/transfer case?

thank you in advance

You need a shift cable from the column to the transmission.

You should replace it before it breaks and your stuck crawling under the truck manually shifting it!

Hope this helps

Well I wouldn’t be laying in the snow trying to mess with it, after install it requires adjustment sometimes and you’d have to be laying down while someone moves the lever and checks for proper engagement and I’m not about that life so I’d take that one to a shop.

Hi,

i crawled underneath the truck and looks like the cable seems to be functioning as it should, i took the cover of the column and inspected the column shifter. it appears to me that the "yellow" spring ( please see pic) has collapsed/broke as the shifter kinda dangles when you pull on it. is this spring replaceable? i am pretty sure this is the culprit as this spring compresses the most when shifting in and out of R

PS this is not my vehicle in pic - its from a you tube video lol

thanks

Wow those always break on 99-06 trucks haven’t seen them on 07+.

Anyways you can technically replace that spring but it’s a pain and there’s a chance of stretching the shift interlock cable. I always replace the shift control assembly.

Good find! Never seen the newer ones broken it’s always the shift cable.

well from what i can tell it is the spring. when the shift lever is in P and i pull on the lever to put it into a gear it is very sloppy/loose. Most noticeable when in P as it kind of just flings forward and back with a light touch with a finger. it dosn't seem to be binding now when i try to put it in R from P or R from N however the sloppiness started soon after the binding went away.

anything else i can look for? the spring doesn't seem broken but i cant tell for sure. do you have a pic of a shift control assembly just so i can confirm what we are exactly talking about? seems like the scrap yards only sell the columns as a whole unit only.

can i change this control assembly with out removing the whole column? if so maybe i can just order a new part Vs replacing the whole column

thanks
