Well today my gfs parents are getting a roof installed.  Come to find out at 7:30am her mom drove past a house same address different street and they were tearing off their roof.  These people were on vacation also.  The guy who did the estimate was one working tearing off which is pretty bad.

Go on vacation come home and have a new roof for free hehe

Doesn't surprise me one bit, which is sad.  That kinda thing happens out here so often.  Homes are just thrown together here with no regard for quality or anything; just profit and mass production.  Make you wonder what kinda idiots are in charge at these places.  ???

Yes, thats the problem, mass production. You have to do so many jobs in order to make any money above taxes. The main reason for this is, anyone and everyone thinks they can be a roofer. They come in with these chincy prices and make us good guys have to lower down our prices just to get jobs. We have crews around here that are all spanish speaking Mexicans with a white collar boss who bids the jobs. These guys come in a van and 6-10 pile out of it and literally attack the house. They are there Sat., Sun., late at nite when people are having a family dinner. It is real pathetic. Even with all that, it is still tough to get some jobs. It is real bad if you can't even tear off the right roof, when you bid it before that.

Another problem is finding workers. 99% of people can't handle a hard working job anymore. This new lazy generation really bothers me.

No kidding, I help a builder with trim and caseing houses (actually most woodwork).  It is amazing the turnover/alcoholics/lazy employees that he goes through in a year.

It blows me away how some of them wont even show up for work 2-3 times a month.

(Usually highschool dropouts that can make $600-$1000 cash a week)

Well, Ryan, let's hope that contractor learned a valuable, if not expensive lesson!!!

Roofer, my dad was a contractor, and he, even in the 70's and 80's (before he retired) had a difficult time keeping any workers, let alone good ones.  I worked with him a lot, and as a result do most of my own house work now, including roofing.  It's amazing what some people will say and do to get jobs - we lost many in the same fashion you mention, and had to go in after the fact and fix their messes, on occasion.

I expect you're familiar with it, but some here may not be, but

Fine Homebuilding has a forum where contractors and other professionals discuss these issues, and I like the magazine as it keeps me fresh (somewhat) with new developments, tools, materials and techniques that I apply to my money pit.

Anyway, my 2 cents.

I started out making that kind of money also. It is hard to get people to work unless it is real easy and there is benefits. The world is benefit happy. Myself, I plan on using my GF's benefits when we get married and I can make the money. She pulls in about 400 a week now, which pays for the little stuff, and I cover the rest of the bills. Why get double benefits when you could just actually work during the day and make some real money. Sure there are plenty that make alot more than I do, but I do pretty good for a 23 yr. old. We had a decent size crew at one time (7 PT employees), but you always have to check their work so much. I don't see why people hire these big companies and then you get their scrubs who aren't even licensed, or maybe even don't know what they are doing, to do the job. Most of the time, the boss just bids the job and sends the bill. We run into so much shabby work it is unbelievable. If a construction company is real big, you for darn sure they are going for quantity, not quality. There is so much stuff going on that the average person doesn't even know. In MN I don't think I would own a newer house with the energy codes they have now. Like I tell everyone, housing is almost the biggest scam going right now. These houses are slapped together like a clearanced Menards shed kit.

BTW, alcoholics normally aren't bad workers, because they will always need more money for beer. LOL

I wasn't aware of that site, thanks for the link. I have a mandatory class every year that I learn alot of the stuff, but I have been looking for a site like that for awhile. I'm waiting for roofing people to start a forum. I sugguested it to them awhile ago, but they don't have it yet.

Great - I'm glad someone can benefit!  Just an additional note:  (I should have mentioned this in the earlier post.  I have no vested interest in Taunton or Fine Homebuilding, but there's not a month that goes by that I don't find something useful to apply to my remodelling in the magazine.

Roofer, couldn't agree more with you about new housing "scams" and 'shams".  I see it all the time - that's why we bought a small fixer-upper in town - lots of mature trees, landscaping, and at least I can fix it the way it should be!!

Funny story here, My Scoutmaster told me that back when he was doing construction, and they needed people, he'd just find homeless guys and pick them up and  let them do a days work with him. Then when the day was over, he'd write a paycheck for them and then asked them where they wanted to be dropped off and they'd say "the liquor store" :).

Then the next-day he'd be driving down the same street in the construction truck and the homeless guys would chase him wanting to do more work sothey could just go through the cycle all over again.

I thought that was funny.

Yep, seems funny how that cycle goes, but we are all the same. We hustle and bustle to get to work, get through the day, and rush home just to sit on our arse again looking at this monitor. It is a vicous cycle.    :D  :)  :D  :D
