Leaking rear diff. What are my options?

Recommended Posts

Truck sat for a few weeks.
Large puddle under the rear diff.
I removed the 3/8 square fill plug pretty easily.
Topped it off with 75/90

Rear place looks rusty.
Hard job to remove and replace?
Replace the rusted plate also or just the gasket?
Best place to buy the part(s)?

Cost if a shop does it?

If you can turn a wrench, you can replace the rear cover on the diff. It's super easy. Remove the 10 bolts, clean the surface up real good, clean the threads on the bolts and slap it back together.

You can buy the cover at many parts stores, same with the gasket.

That is the Dorman part number.

And this is the Napa part number for the cover.

NOE 6351065

It's like $35 for a new cover plus whatever the gasket costs and the fluid.

With a shop it going to cost a lot more than buying it yourself. The mark up on the part is going to 50% or more, then you pay for the labor of probably .5 to 1 hour for removal, install, new fluid, plus the costs of their fluid at a mark up and disposal fee's and tax. I'd guess at $150-200 for a shop to do it. If you do it yourself it will be under $70 all said and done.
