Cover the end of the wire so it's not exposed to the elements or be able to short out against the body of the truck.

Yes, From the diagram above, just cap the red wire instead of connecting it to the brown wire and install the resistor as shown.  I haven't had any problems. 

so the resister is connected to dark green and black wire ? Or just dark green and black ?
