Service Engine Soon light on

My '98 K1500 has 62,000 miles on it and the service engine soon light came on after I let it warm up for 5 minutes in my driveway. It was on when I came back into the truck. (Wasn't on 5 minutes before.) After I backed it up into my garage, I shut the garage door and shut off the engine. I shut the engine on and off a few times, but the light remained on. When I got out of the truck, the exhaust had a real strong smell to it, almost like rotten eggs. The truck has never stunk up the garage like that before. I have an OBDII tool on the way to check it out. In the meantime I'd like to hear what you guys think what it could be.

Sounds like to me that your catalytic converter is going out or has gone out

You're running rich. That's for sure. You may have a HO2S code. If it's not dealt with soon, the rich mixture will wipe out the cat.

Well, I found out the story. The scan-tool told all. It said I have 2 O2 sensors going bad. The dealer wants $355 to change the sensors. It is also $35 per sensor. This on a truck with 62,000 miles on it, WTF?

Initially the scanner told me that it was a sensor on bank one, I thought it was #2. Couldn't remember if it was bank 1 number 2 or bank 2 number 1 so I went to have mine rescanned (Autozone) and now they tell me it is reading a low flow code on bank one. Then they tell me it must be a bad Cat. I think I have an exhaust leak because of a broken manafold bolt that side. I want to get that fixed frist then re-scan. Truck still runs great for a bad cat????

 

My light shuts off occasionally but I heard that it could be possible to have a bad O2 sensor around 75,000.

 

By the way, save yourself the money and change them yourself. They are pretty easy. $35 each are pretty good price. I found them at Autozone for $60 for the fronts and $85 for the rears. Not sure if that was the each price or the single price.
