gmc vs chevy

What made you people buy a GMC verses Chevy. For example, all you gmc sierra people out there, why didn't you buy a chevy silverado and vise versa? I know theres differences between the two, but I don't understand why GMC and chevy have 2 lines. Why not just make either ore?

It was simple for me,I didn't like the body molding and front ends ,not to mention my neighbor is the local GMC service manager,,so I decided to go professional grade

Typically GMC has more luxurious options. Also, they have a slightly different front end, which is a big thing for many people. I know if I had to buy an 03+ truck right now, I would look at the GMC models simply because I don't like the nose that Chevy designed for their latest and greatest models.

But why people buy GMC vs. Chevy is almost like asking the impossible question of why people chose red over blue or vice versa. Each side will justify their reason, but in the end it all comes down to preference.

I liked both and went with Chevy for no particular reason. Chevy 1500HDs seemed to be more available in my area. But, if I was buying now, I would go with GMC for the looks because I don't care for the 2003 Chevy front end.

I agree with you all regarding the front end looks. I don't like the new silverados front end, and I too would buy a gmc if I bought one tomorrow. However, I have a 1998 silverado, which I really love. I like the old look of the silverados better than the new. To me a 1998 silverado and a 1998 sierra really don't look that much different except the front end and a couple of other things.

My family used to own a Chevy dealership and I along with my dad and brother have always owned Chevy trucks. I bought a GMC this year mainly because of overall looks. I can deal with the look of the front end now but I can't deal with the profilre shot of the truck. The foot of front fender that sticks out in front of the front wheel looks way out of place to me. I also don't care for the hood seam that runs down the side of the front fender or the hard lines of the front half of the truck clashing with the smooth lines of the back half. The 70's style side moldings look better off the truck too. Dig the 03 tail lights though. Installed them on my GMC!

Not trying to bash anyone who has an 03 Chevy because that is why we have choices and these are the reasons why I made my choice to go with the GMC.

I don't understand why GMC and chevy have 2 lines.

It's a marketing thing. Same reason that for many years OMC made Evinrude and Johnson motors and Brunswick made Merc and Mariners which were absolutely identical except for graphics and trim. Some guys loved Evinrude and insisted Johnson was junk and vice-versa.

1998 silverado

Had a 98 Silverado before I got my 02, and the primary reason I went with the Chevy is because I didn't really care for the front end of the GMC's then. Also, it seems that in my locality, Chevy's are just a tad cheaper. And back then, I was really tight on $$ so every little penny counted.

If I could have been patient and waited 2-3 months I could have had one of the 99 new body styles. But I was afraid of the first year run. But I always have been, as those seem to be the worst. My 98 was solid, and I liked it. But I love the 02. With exception the CSK, I think this is the best vehicle I've ever owned.

I live south of Portland, Oregon. Our local Chevrolet dealer, Town & Country Chevy, has a superb service department. They do super work and will not recommend a repair unless it is absolutely needed. Even then, the price is very fair.

The GMC dealership is right across the highway from T&C and the difference is night and day. The GMC dealer is a real combat outfit and the service(?) is abysmal.

Actually, I don't mind the Chevy front end, it kind of reminds me of my 2002 Avalanche. Hey, it's OK.

My 2003 Chevy Z-71 has been the finest truck I've ever owned. Absolutely flawless.

i went with a chevy just because the chevy dealer offered me more for my trade than the gmc dealer did!

i kind of wish that gm would combine the 2 somehow so that they could outsell the f-150 and we wouldnt have to always hear about the f-150 being the best selling vechicle for however many years running. caue for at least the last couple of years chevy+gmc has outsold the ford..

I agree 100%

AS far as GM keeping two lines, here is the reason. Having a GMC truck allows dealerships that are not Chevrolet dealerships the ability to sell GM trucks.

Over the years, they have made them almost identical in look, but they have now decided to make one a bit different from the other to appeal to a larger range of buyers.

For those of you who bought a GMC because you did not like the front clip of the Silverado, if there was no GMC available, you may have looked at Ford, Dodge, or Yote instead. By having two "lines", GM is able to approach a larger number of possible sales.

For most buyers, color and looks are the first considerations when buying a vehicle.

Personally, I think GM's dual line of trucks is great. If I were to buy today, it would be a GMC because I don't like the front clip of the Silverado. Since I love the look of my 2000 model, I will keep it until something better comes along or until it croaks!

I bought the Chevy vs. GMC purely on the basis of I like the new front ends on the Chevy a lot and the incentives, nobody had a 2003 GMC left in my area when I bought. The GMCs are pretty neat, but I was at the dealer the other day waiting for my truck to be serviced and they had two brand new 2004's sitting there inside the service bay, a black Silverado and a black Sierra both Z71 packages and about identical on features and price. If I were buying one of those, I definitely would have bought the Silverado as it looked a lot sharper in my opinion. Lots of folks did not like the front end on my Silverado when I bought it. They just plain stated that to me. I said no problem, and guess what, now they are saying hey that does look pretty cool. Scenario kind of reminds me of the Dodge redesign in 1994. I would buy either Chevy or GMC given the right circumstances. Just my humble opinion.

I bought my '99 GMC because the dealer was 2 miles away and I fell in love with the truck. I would've bought another GMC except the same dealer (4 trucks later!!) didn't have the time to talk to me!!?? I still like the GMC front end better but the Chevy front looks good all one color. Oh yeah, and GMC didn't have an SS.
