Tow/Haul switch

A few days ago my '00 Yukon automatically switched into Toe/Haul mode after I started it and placed it in gear. Pushing the button in the end of the lever did nothing. So I shut the truck off, restarted it, and everything was normal, so I drove it. The next day, it happened again, but this time it wouldn't come out of Tow/Haul mode with the switch or by shutting it down. I had to drive in that mode for quite awhile - then finally later int eh day when I restarted, it was back to normal. Now, it is consistently normal every time I drive it, but I can't get it INTO Tow/Haul mode! It seems to me that the switch is bad.....

Any advice on where to go from here? Do i start by replacing the switch? Can it be replaced separately from the shift lever? Is there maybe a relay or breaker somewhere else I shoudl check?

No warnign lights, and I plugge din my code reader and found no codes....

Also, whent he light was on, it was definately in the Tow/Haul mode - it wasn't just the light on.

thanks

You're the first person I've heard with this problem... Most switch related problems are for the Auto 4x4 Switches.

My first guess would be the same as yours -- the switch is bad. I don't know how you would confirm it, but that would be my guess...

BTW, Welcome to the forum, and hopefully someone else on here can come up with a more concrete solution to your problem.

 i looked at the all data wiring when you press the tow haul switch you supply a ground to the body control module that i assume tells the light to come on and puts it in tow haul mode it could be the switch but i would probably bet on a bad ground, i have seen several post on a bad ground junction i would check that first

Thanks Shaners - Yea, I replaced my Auto 4x4 switch about 10,000 miles ago for the common problem many of us have had, but this tow/haul thing has me stumped. I've never heard of it happening to anyone before. I need to dig in and find where it is in the wiring and play with it. I've been trying to find a way to remove the switch from the lever but stuck on that one too.

Good news!! Easy fix! Removed the steering column shroud and there's an orange cased pair of wires that come out of the base of the shift lever and head down behind the dash. About 2 inches from where they emerge from the shift lever they were cleanly broken off. Almost looks like they may have gotten pinched in the mechanism that allows the shift lever to move front to back. So, easy splice and I'm back in Tow/Haul mode!
