No more mod money for awhile

I have not driven my car (98 Buick Century) for the last 4 days and today when I went out to start it I got a big surprise. The windshield had a foot long crack in it. I am really bummed about the thought of buying a new windshield. I will have to call around on Monday to see what it is going to cost. This means no Bilsteins for awhile.

That just makes your day doesn't it.  I've been really luck so far and haven't had to replace a windshield yet, don't want to either.  Not the cheapest thing to have go out, especially on the newer vehicles.

btw, Shane has a very good point.  The windshield on my cousins F350 got large crack last spring, and once the crack got to a certain length (or in the line of sight) his insurance paid to replace it.

Z check around because if it's just a commuter car you might be able to buy a factory 2nd.  I used to get them from a glass guy that lived next to my uncle.  They just have minor cosmetic scratches around the edges, they can't sell them as firsts and they can't sell any at all if the scratches are in the viewing area, used to get them for about 1/2 price.

Just something to think about...

Most materials, especially glass, once they have a crack......the crack propagates (gets bigger).  The crack also weakens the material, it wouldn't surprise me 25-50% for glass.  I know its expensive, but once I notice a crack, I'd replace it.  If not for the strength, but to get rid of the distraction that you have to focus path.

btw....what type of Buick?  Please say it is an 86 Buick Regal Grand National

Insurance will cover it.  We had three replaced on our K3500 we used to have, all in the same summer.  If you have a good company they will even send a crew to fix it at your house rather than you taking it in.

My Vette just got whacked with a monster rock and left a starburst about the size of a 50 cent piece. I opted to have it fixed instead of replaced and it came out perfect. The guy said they can even fix 2 foot long cracks. My insurance company (Nationwide) was very happy to pay the $50 instead of a new windshield. To the best of my limited knowledge, States only require liability insurance but if it is financed the bank will probably require full coverage. The shops that I contacted here in Maryland all guaranteed the fix to pass MD. inspection.

I thought ALL states were required to cover windshields with no deductible...

I know last winter in CO, even with full coverage, I had to pay $100 deductable for a new windshield.  I'd have to ask the wife how she set us up in WY, to see if we have to pay a deductable here.  I'm pretty sure in NC, I would've had to pay a deuctable too, but that's been several years -
