towing with bed weight

Recommended Posts

I have a 20' 1500 rst 4x4 and I'm curious if I can tow my 4800-5000lbs camper with 800-900lbs of weight in the bed of the truck.  I tow the camper no problem, but I was considering getting a golf cart.  I have a short bed so I either will have to take of the tailgate or buy a hitch extender.  I also have a distribution hitch.  I'm just wondering if the truck is capable of handling the weight load.

Find the sticker on your truck that shows max payload. Subtract how much weight you're carrying of the trailer based on the WDH (if you can hook up the trailer and get actual axle weights for the truck with and without the trailer connected so you know exactly how much you're actually carrying). Subtract for each passenger and any other cargo directly in the truck. What's left is available for your golf cart...

The tongue weight is probably around 550-600. Add 800-900 to that you're at say 1500. Two passengers,300 more. Gas , gear, food, beer, propane. Pets? Kids? What else?
You are going to be fine as far as GCWR. Your payload is maxed out or over more than likely.

BTW you are heavier than you think I'm willing to bet. Most guys are. Go to a Cat scale and weigh it. Costs $12
