Looking for some advice on my 2003 Z71 Avalanche.  Transmission is in need of replacing.  If I replace it with a rebuilt one, does it need to have the computer reflashed or will it drive properly without the hassles of going to a shop.

It would not require any computer reflash, there is no TCM on the older 4L60e.

You could buy a GM reman transmission and install no problem.

That’s what I was hoping to hear.  Not sure where I’ll get a rebuilt transmission from yet, not sure who has the best price and quality.

Shop around and call a few places for sure.

GM parts direct has them for $2,100. I would call your local dealership for a prices and availability as well.

Summit Racing has a reman transmission for $1,600+ freight and you ship your core back. I would call them to make sure you get the correct one if you went that route.

Call a local transmission shop for a quote but many places may not do take outs for warranty reasons. Would be different if you had place do the work.

You'll want a new torque converter too. No sense in putting a used converter back into a new transmission.

Thanks for help.  Looks like I’ll be doing some calling today.  Today was the first measure able snow fall, would have been nice to have the 4wd.

I replaced my 4l60 in my 93 Silverado about 7 years ago with a GM trans. Best warranty back then. 3 years 36 K miles.

I would go GM because they do a better job IMO.

Don't know about where you are but around here in Utah, there are lots of really good Transmission shops that probably have a 4l60 sitting on the shelf. Last one I had rebuilt cost me $700.  It's been a few years but I can't see paying more than $1000 for a stock transmission. Both of my rebuilds lasted well over any warranty mileage. Just my thoughts. Hope you get it back on the road soon.
