Strangeness with the voltmeter...

Wierd happenings with the Burb today. Was driving home on the interstate and I felt the power steering get light on me. I looked at the dash and the airbag light was on and the voltmeter was all the way across to 19V. I also heard a relay or relays clicking in the drivers side fuse box and the message center had the battery symbol lit.

 

This happened several times. SOmetimes the voltmeter would peg out, sometimes it would be at (I guess) 16 or 17 Volts.

 

Any ideas? Why would the PS get light, is the progressive nature of the PS controlled electrically? Is my alternator on the fritz?

 

Anyone else experienced this?
