gear oil change

I've heard that switching to Mobil 1 in the trans will make is shift much better... Has anyone changed there own trans fluid and how much trouble is it? Remember this is a manual 5-speed.

And how much oil does it take, my book doesn't say.

I have been thinking about doing this for.... I dunno..... a couple years? It shouldnt be too dificult, just like changing your oil but no filter and you have to squirt the fluid in using a piece of hose attached to the bottle. Check your owners manual for the amount of fluid, they have a nice 'capacities' chart in there somewhere.

D'oh, just noticed you said your book dosent say how much fluid. I would check again cause Im sure its in there, if I can remember I'll take a look in mine after work.

Couldn't find it in the manual, called the dealer they said 2.9 qts..

I bought the gear oil and a little hand pump that screws on to an oil bottle, now the only problem is getting the drain and fill plugs out.. It seems they're allen screws, REALLY BIG allen screws.

I'm going to try to borrow one. Two of the guys I work with are part of the local F-body club (one has a Trans AM WS6 and the other a Z28 SS) both have manual trans, and hopfully one has done this, has the tools, and the plugs are the same on the 6 speed.

You should see a big difference running the synthetic.

Do you know if yours called for the synchromesh? Just wondering. That is a specific oil and a few aftermarket manufactures make a sub. I have read on BITOG that the synchromesh is really good stuff, just expensive. Redline, Royal Purple and AMSOIL make a replacement. But from what I read the GM synchromesh is well liked. Something to think about if your's requires it.

You can go to an Auto Zone if you have one and they loan out tools. You put a deposit down but will get it back when you return the tool.

:(

According to my Helm, there are two trannies offered:

The NV3500 holds 2.2 quarts and needs "GM Syncromesh." That would be any good GL-4 lube, a synthetic will provide better performance and durability.

The NV4500 is a HD cast-iron case tranny. Holds 4 quarts and needs Castrol Syntorq LT. I doubt you have this tranny.
