CD82 Posted June 23, 2021 Posted June 23, 2021 so i have a 2014 silverado with the 5.3l in it. right now i am sitting at 52k miles on the od. so last september i had an issue fixed with the truck at the dealership it was near the end of september of 2020.. so i had rodent damage to the ac box and it was leaking water into the passenger side floor board. insurance claim was done and they paid for the issue at the dealership.. well the shop was like 3 weeks behind and by the time i got it out of the shop we had severl cool fronts and the temps were not that hot i think it was like 75 the day i got the truck back.. and it seemed to cool just fine and i didnt think anything of it to be honest.. so here it is nearly july in texas were seeing 100 degree temps out and it acts like it hardly wants to blow any cool air.. but now keep in mind when the temps are in low 80s 70s etc it blows cool air just fine and great.. the hotter it gets the less it wants to blow cold air.. ive explained this to the dealership and what has happend they recalled working on my truck. they dot really recall if the topped off the refregerant or not and said it would be a month before they can even look at it.. and of course if its something they didnt have any dealing with them id be out the money he said they would tear it apart again that bill the insurance paid was like 3200$ im trying to keep from going that distance so could this be a freon issue could it be low ? could it be a leak some where like many of the 14s and 15s had with the condensor? i dont get paid till friday i may get one of the 25$ guages at the auto parts store and check the freon. just trying to get some ideas here if it could be low freon or other issues
CrawlSlow Posted June 24, 2021 Posted June 24, 2021 There's "if's" when it comes to AC. ** don't use those cheap guage. It doesn't give you accurate reading. First measure both high and low ports for pressure. Low pressure could mean low freon or leak. To test for leak, you would need to pull negative pressure. Now comes the "if's" If your system is holding pressure. It could be due to a bad condenser or fan. Does it blow cold air at high speed? Spray condenser with water, the first few minutes of driving should be blowing cold air. If pressure is to high, does your car shake when idle/complete stop? Could be overcharged causing compressor to not work properly. Could also be bad condenser and or fan not cooling the freon. If one side is higher then normal, there's a clog. The most important part is measure pressure for both side.
CrawlSlow Posted June 24, 2021 Posted June 24, 2021 You mentioned that they don't recall if they top off the refrigerant or not. You should probe into what was done when they fixed your AC box. Was the AC line ever open? If so, "topping off" is not doing anything, it needs to be vacuum and recharge. I have a hard time trusting dealership. Thier goal is to get money from you at all cost!
CD82 Posted June 24, 2021 Author Posted June 24, 2021 with the ac at high speed it doesnt seem to blow any cooler air then what it does on medium or low.. little guage stuck in the vent the air doesnt get any colder than about 82 or so thats when its 93 out side.. my mechanic buddy will be home with his guage set this weekend.. im going to see if he will test the high and low pressure.. ill call dealership tomorrow an see if they recall having the lines open.. they replaced that entire box behind the dash id think they would have had the lines open i did barrow a neighbors little 20$ guage from orielly aand it was showing in the green right almost at the 50 mark... ill let my buddy with his good set of guages test it saturday
CrawlSlow Posted June 24, 2021 Posted June 24, 2021 I mean does it make any difference while driving at highway speed vs surface street speed.
CD82 Posted June 24, 2021 Author Posted June 24, 2021 no not really if im on the highway and had to pass someone at 80 or so it seems blow hot for a bit
CrawlSlow Posted June 24, 2021 Posted June 24, 2021 Make sure your AC button is pressed (should light up). If you have dual climate, make sure they are in sync. I know these steps sound stupid but it's worth checking. Check to see if compressor is running, if it runs then check for pressure.
CD82 Posted June 24, 2021 Author Posted June 24, 2021 the ac button is pressed the dual digital climate control is in sync.. i get condinsation on the ground << forgot to mention in orig post i apoligise when i get on the trottle real head i do get hot air
CrawlSlow Posted June 24, 2021 Posted June 24, 2021 Does the truck feels rough at time when at complete stop/idle while AC is on?
CrawlSlow Posted June 25, 2021 Posted June 25, 2021 Report back with pressure on both high and low side.
CD82 Posted June 25, 2021 Author Posted June 25, 2021 10/4 yeah my buddy will be here sat ill have him check it just baffles me lol that it condinsates and stuff lol i can trun it down to like 61 and the air in there dont get below 80
