Hi there,

How are you guys?

Quick question here,

is it ok to drive new car for a long distance trip?
I drove my new truck yesterday for over 1000km back and forth.

Thats after i hit 805km(500mi).
Now i have 1,900km.

Is that bad for the engine?

and plus

Im going again in the next 2 or 3wks,

this time ill be going across the province, thats probably going to take 1600km or more each way.

Should i get the oil change before going for the next trip or i should be fine?

Thank you guys for the help!
have a one!

It's less about how far you go and more about how you go. Easy for awhile and don't drone on. Change is up a bit. Change oil and filter more often...that sort of thing

An oil change would be a good idea. Yes. Between 500 and a 1,000 miles is a good first change IMHO and experience.

Motors are receiving finer finishes at build than we gave them say 50 years ago so there is less debris during run in but they are also fit tighter in the piston to cylinder wall area and rings are much thinner and fit more closely as well. More the reason you keep the speed and load low for a bit to keep the heat in check. Not the heat on the gauge but the oil heat in the ring land location. 5,000 mile oil changes are also better idea than using the OLM. And yes I get allot of pushback on that and that push will never move me.

Let the games begin!!

I’m the other side. GB will say I’m shadowing him as a form of intimidation. I’m not he answers everything. It’s his right, just as it is mine. That being said. The dozens of trucks I’ve bought and serviced. Including one ton pulling trucks. We’re driven day one as they were going to be driven. Cars, heavy equipment (hundreds) the same. After the first trip the oil would be changed to synthetic (Amsoil) usually. Then go extended. Transmission too. The difference today is most manufacturers use synthetic. I would, and do go by their maintenance schedule. At least till the end of the warranty. Yes I follow the little oil change light. If I work it I use the maintenance schedule for that. My 20 year old truck, 10 year old car and the new one follow the oil change light. When I was driving 50K miles a year 25K oil changes with Amsoil. My experience is with many vehicles and 45 years. When in doubt read the manual. If their smart enough to build it. The can figure out maintenance.

Yeah inside 500mi, i was driving it as what the manual said.

Dont drive pass 50mi (88km) till you pass the 500mi( 805km) for break in period.

made a mistake driving it to work first day, took it in the freeway was driving 110km.

Finger cross hoping that wont do any damage.

After the break in perion, i went to visit a family,

It was about 500km from where i am from.

was driving in the highway speed limit is 110km. I was driving it about 120-140km/h.

I never floored it or anything, which is not really my thing.

Just an idea is that bad for new engine?

 Driving it over 120-150km/hr?

Thats not all the way,

i go up and down with my speed.

Likely not. People get away with it all the time. Then again, some don't.

Once your past 1K km let 'r rip tater chip.

Look it's a machine. Harder you use it the quicker it wears out. The harder you use it the more fuel and oil it uses. The quicker tires and brakes wear out. You have to decide how much pain you're willing to endure. That right foot of yours is directly connected to your bank account. Won't hurt me a bit. 😉

For sure,

ill use it more here before going to road trip for more mileage.

ill be easy on her when we go for that long drive.

i drove that 130-140 just to go up and down with the speed coz thats what they said in manual dont go the same speed.

ill probably have 2500km by the time i go for a long drive or even more.

Yup i totally agree with you when you said about its not how far i go, its about how hard i go with it,

never floored that truck, never done a bad break application on it either.

Btw the 2000km is that fully broken in?

Honest answer? No. However few people even care to ask the question and you can treat it like your custom permits.

You see the left side of the chart below? That wear rates during break in. Fuel economy is a good proxy for wear. In the beginning you will get huge increases in economy and then it will reach a plateau or will seem to. It just slows down but continues to increase. When it really peaks you will be at that line between Wear In and Normal Operation and that friend can take tens of thousand of mile or KM as the case may be. Over the 'Normal Operation" portion it will fade ever so slowly you may not even notice unless you keep meticulous records and subject them to statistical analysis. At some point economy will fade fast no matter how sharp a tune you put on it and finally....poof.

How long you are stay in the Normal phase has a great deal to do with how you treat it and maintain it. Enjoy your need truck.

I took possesion of my truck on July 31, 2020 in Virginia.  Got the 500 mile break in done, and then some in 2 weeks.  Drove to California in August.  Truck mpg peaked at 23.9 over a 50 mile stretch and 20.x over a 400 mile stretch.  Truck still runs like a champ, with no major issues.  Only work so far has been adding accessories, regularly scheduled preventative maintenance, and replaced a fog light and tailgate bushing under warranty.  Tailgate bushing was caused by a GM Accessory, which is no longer on my truck.

Also, beware of Grump Bear.  Disagree with him and you might end up getting blocked.  He's notorious for being difficult when challenged.  He doesn't even own a T1, but is bored enough with his life that he hangs out here.
