Encoder motor alignment

Hi, I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500 z71.  I am replacing the encoder motor.  I got the new one and it won't line up to slide on.  I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue.  I had to replace the transfer case as well.  I'm at a standstill with the truck.  i had to use a little bit of force to remove the old one so wasn't sure if there was something I missed.  It seems as if the encoder motor is slightly off from the shaft for the transfer case.  Any help would be greatly apricated.  The encoder motor is currently in 4hi so if anyone know the spots of which notch is what gear that would even help.
