Looks good. Maybe an inch lower on the front if you want to keep the back where it is. Otherwise, 2/4 would probably look pretty sweet too.

Yes a little. Go on an even slab against a brick wall and use mortar joints as a guide. I use my local post office. You'll have to spin the shim around 180° between the bottom leaf and axle to get the correct pinion angle and prevent vibration.
