'22 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLE.

As per a notice in the mail that the heated steering wheel components are now available for installation, called the dealer service department today and set an appointment.

When asked, initially the rep advised it was a 10 minute job as it was a simple component swap-out, then after he did some checking to confirm, he advised they would actually need the truck all morning as the entire steering wheel has to be replaced and the old one sent back to the factory.

Seems a bit weird to me, and I wonder if someone down the road will be getting a used steering wheel in their brand new truck, or do they just chuck the old one in the garbage?

Anyone had this done yet and can confirm if they received a completely new wheel?

I did this last week, and they replace the entire steering wheel. the new steering wheel is junk. I'm having them put the original back on and will wait to see when the litigation begins. The new steering wheels are from a new supplier and are not available as leather wrapped. I originally purchased the heated steering wheel that was leather wrapped. $80K for a truck and GM wants to put a plastic POS steering wheel on it.

Thanks Blue20Sailor, for the heads-up.

My appointment was for 9 am this morning, but on Saturday my 10 yr old grand-daughter showed up from Colorado (to B.C.) as a surprise birthday gift. Needless to say, I cancelled and re-scheduled my appointment as a result.

Now that I know, I will be asking to see the replacement wheel when I attend the next appointment. If it does not match my old one exactly (except with the heated element, of course), I will decline.

Finally got in to my appointment for the heated steering wheel change out.

When I arrived, I asked the service rep about the new wheel and whether it was an exact match (with added component, of course) and that I wished to see the replacement before installation to ensure it was not as described by Blue20Sailor.

Service rep went off to get the wheel for my inspection, and returned about 15 minutes later, empty-handed. Said it was good that I asked to see the wheel before I left the vehicle because the new wheels are on back order and have been so for at least one month, with eta unknown (so when were you going to tell me this??). Told me I would be contacted when/if it arrives.

I also asked him what GM does with the old wheels and he confirmed that they get chucked in the garbage.

Figure I should give a concluding update.

Took the truck in yesterday for the wheel recall/replacement.

Procedure took about two hours and the replacement wheel is an exact match (leather wrapped, unlike the outcome for Blue20Sailor - wonder if this is a Canada/U.S. thing?) to the old one, which they chucked in the garbage (as per the manufacturers instructions - what a waste).
