I have a new to me 2000 GMC Sierra with the 4.8l engine. 3 door, 2wd. It is very nice condition, no body rust. bought from original owner. Vehicle has around 220k miles on it. Runs great. Was at Home Depot yesterday and was backing out of a parking spot and was at full left lock when I felt a slight pop or bump and the power steering was gone. Armstrong'd it  into another spot and popped the hood, expecting a broken serpentine. Belt was tight. No whine from power steering pump, no leaks. This has a Rack & Pinion and it appears dry. I will put it up on my lift tonight but this is weird to me. Anyone experince anything like this?

Thanks,

I have never fooled with a rack and pinion but have fooled with the PS pump; Just changed them out, learned to bleed them. In your story you say "This has a Rack & Pinion and it appears dry." Do you mean it's not leaking?, I don't know what it could be in your pump but I suspect some thing internal in the pump. Try Youtube, try just asking the question in your browser, "sudden no power steering after popping sound 2000 GMC Sierra with the 4.8l engine." et the forum know how it works out!
