Oil change for 5.3

Dizzy, which Stan mentioned earlier is now at 256K and uses about a quart in 2K miles. I think that is awful, but others think it isn't too bad.

Anyway, Dizzy used zero between 5K OCI's predominantly on Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5W30. By 80K she was using oil to the tune of a quart in 600 miles. Yes, I resurrected it and no, not the point of the post. The design has issues and as Stan noted those 'types' of issue got even hardliners like Stan to shorten their change intervals. Me too.

The OEM recommended 7.5K for Dizzy and from the day I took over its maintenance I dropped it to 5K based on forum feedback and the sheer number of lawsuits this motor has entertained for this very issue.

As it turned out, even 5K was too long-

For a Full Synthetic Dexos1Gen2 licensed oil.

I hoped I learned a few things in the schoolhouse of Dizzy. Like:

1.) Chemistry appropriate OCI's. (Oil and fuel type).

2.) Mileage (ring seal) appropriate OCI's.

3.) Situational/seasonal appropriate OCI's.

4.) Risk managed SAE grade and chemistry selection.

5.) Mileage and condition (ring seal) SAPS selection.

6.) Unit age (mileage) and condition (ring seal) operational adjustments.

7.) Spot lab testing, especially if you suspect any issue. Or after repair of one. Or to 'find your OCI mark".

8.) Tuneup frequency and parts selection.

Confession: Before buying post 2014 GM's I ran OEM OCI's and fluids on most things and yes, once in a while got bit right on the nose for it and assumed 'luck of the draw". The few I ran boutiques in NEVER had an issue even at OEM OCI's and yet I failed to make some basic connections between motor condition and engine type risk management. I got pretty smug and overly confident in my maintenance and ridged in my routine and fluid selections. The Ecotec series GM motors have humbled me. I got "Schooled". :crackup:

Changing my view doesn't make me wishy washy and weak. Change came about as a willingness to be wrong, publicly wrong and to be adaptable to the new technologies around us. That is the type of strength that advances success.

Once it cools off I’m changing the transmission fluid in the Odyssey. It’s oil sensitive in the transmission. My daughter did the schedule change. It was one drain and fill just over 3gt. At 127K when I traded her the CRV the odyssey had a shutter with slow speed shifts. It was easy enough I changed the fluid 3 times one week apart each. Problem solved. It will be at 30K miles on the fluid when I do it again. My wife’s Genesis had its second recently at 135k. Yes even though I balked early on at your suggestions. Today if you’re looking to go awhile between new vehicles. You have to at least cut the recommended manufacturers suggestions for maintenance in half.
