Speedometer needle going up and down while driving etc...

I have a 2008 Silverado. Whilst driving along the freeway at about 65mph the seatbelt light came on, the speedometer needle started fluctuating up and down and there was an intermittent whirring sound in time with the speedo. This lasted for about 10-15 seconds then stopped. It hasn't happened since but I don't do a lot of driving. Any ideas?
