Whats the best way to get 3M tape off without killing the paint? I broke a ventshade and decided to get a new set but in order to put them on I need to remove the old tape and that crap is hard to get off! Any one have any ideas?

Well, I guess it's time for me to step into it... My first post but I've been watching the forum for quite awhile now and have learned alot. Your question got me looking, 'cuz my GM bedrail caps are stuck on with the same 3M supersticky tape, and I wanted to know how to remove 'em if I had to... so I turned to google for some info.

3M sells some removal 'pads' that run at 4500 rpm (!) and designed not to harm the paint. I imagine you'd have to be a bit careful... The product ID is 61-5000-9429-9 at 3m.com.

And I found this on a F150 forum; it sounds more what I'd try:

Flscrew, you can try rolling the tape off with your thumb but it will hurt after a bit (thumb) Any remaing adhesive can be loosed with bug and tar remover or WD-40. You can also purchase what they call an Eraser Wheel that can be attached to a drill it is used the bodyshop industry for taking off pin stripe and molding tape works fast and will not harm the paint if you don't hold it in one place to long.

Mild solvent, elbow grease & patience (& tunes & MGD) should get the job done :(

try goof off its sold in a small can. at any hard wear store. works great and thats what auto vent shade suggested to me.

Also, WD-40 can be used, although it isn't as strong and takes longer. GoofOff, GooGone... any automotive store sells adhesion and glue removers. Don't use ACETONE or paint removers. D'uh! Hey, it has been done. One guy thought that since vehicles today use ClearCoat, that it was safe to use a paint remover.

Regarding replacing the Ventshades, you might want to check out WeatherFlectors. They don't use tape, align themselves automatically since they have a lip that goes in the gasket channel. They are a little pricey, but are the best ventshades I have used:

I am suprised nobody has used a heat gun and plastic razor blades. That is what i used at a detail shop and it worked awsome. Heat guns are bought at home depot for 25$. Just do not keep the gun very close to the paint in the same spot for a long long time, the paint will melt. Other than that, warm it up and it usually comes off in on peice. If it is old and dry use wd-40 and plastic razon blades with the heat gun. Make sure the surface is completly clean. That will do it.
