Shift Lever Problem

Hi I am new here and hope this website is as helpful as a couple other I belong to.

 

I have a 92 GMC K2500 Ext Cab with a 5.7 and a 4L60 tranny. This morning I stopped for a coffee and when I went to shift my truck from Drive to Park I heard a pop or crack of sorts and the shift lever went sloppy on me. It just kind of flops.

Everyhting else works fine as far asiveability and such so I have only 3 questions:

 

1) Is this a big deal to fix ?

2) How do I fix or rather do I need to diassassemble the whole steering column?

3) If I don't fix it could I lose it all together?

If the linkage has come apart, how can you shift the gears? ie. P,R,D

Almost sounds like a bushing went bad.Gona need 2 do a visual check on the linkage,you might wanna start there 1st.

I will be checking the linkage as soon as I figure out my alternator/voltage regulator gremlin!!!

I'm pretty positive it's just a small spring inside your column that keeps tension on your shifter. You said you can shift fine but it flops around. Does it flop around front to back, as int he motion you use to pull back to shift in and out of gears? If so, that's your problem. I had 2 of them snap on my '91 and it was like your describing.

 

I replaced both myself, but it was a little bit of a pain just because of working in a tight place. I think I was able to do it without taking the column apart, but that was a long time ago, and I'm not 100% sure.
