Anyone know other than by being contacted by them, how to tell if you may have one of the affected trannies? Neighbors got an 04 1500 crew a few weeks back and I want to give them a heads up if theirs may be included.

The GM Powertrain Willow Run transmission plant produces the Hydra-Matic 4L80-E (4-speed rear-wheel-drive) transmission for full-size trucks, sport-utility vehicles and large vans, and the 4T80-E (4-speed front-wheel-drive) for luxury cars. The plant also produces transmission components for several other GM transmission models.

A quick look around the GM site shows the 4L80-E is available only on the 2500 and 3500 models (I had a bit of an adrenalin rush when I saw the article; it's 5 hours to the nearest city and an hour between gas stations around here, and I travel alot... a crappy tranny in my new Sierra 1500 was the last thing I needed!!!))

Where did you find the actual name of the plant? I can find that both of those transmissions are assembled at the Ypsilanti, MI, but I can't find the Willow Run part.

 

I have the transmission you are refering to in my brand new '04 Sierra 2500HD. I guess I should have bought a lottery ticket that day too. I could have got lucky twice, not.

Willow Run is what GM has referred to their Ypsilanti plant for years.

 

The Fort Wayne Truck Plant is now referred to Roanoke for some reason. It is the closest place, but a lot smaller than Ft. Wayne.

we have at least 70 trucks at my dealer that need repiars

not to mention the customer who had his transmission rebuilt at 1200 k

only to fail again a week later because no one knew about the problem.

so our transmission guys are gonna be busy for a while

Does anyone know what set of trucks would be effected? Meaning say Feb-Mar production, etc. Or is it something that just occured the past few weeks. Reason I ask is I picked up my 04 2500 LD Nov 1st. Have not noticed any tranny issues but wonder how I would find out if mine is effected? I dont notice a recall on it on the GM site?

I have a '04 2500HD GMC w/ 290 miles, took it in today to get a couple things looked at and mention the trans issue. The service writer was not sure what I was talking about, but said he would check with the service manager and get back to me. I left it with them to look at. He called me and said it is the transmission that is having the problems (4L80E), not sure if mine has the problem yet or not, but I could not have it back until they checked. They will be putting me in a rental car until they get it fixed. Can not drive the truck.

 

SO if you have a '04 with the 4L80E, take it in before you have problems.

I hope you're one of the lucky ones. I have a 2500LD CC and GM called me at home the Saturday before last. Took mine to the dealer last week. They are very aware of it. Lucky for me, mine was OK. Took the truck to the dealer this AM for some small stuff. They have several customers that need new trannies and don't have any ETA on availability from GM. What a nightmare!!!

According to the article the problem has just risen meaing us early buyers will be okay. GM has moved more than 25,000 4L80E's since the model year. No letter no worries.

cg6149, what's the build date on the pillar of your truck? Might help narrow down as to what trucks are involved....

Went today to get the loaner, but they did not have much info for me. Mine was not on the lot but a week or so before a got it last week. I was the first customer to even sit in it. So mine will definately be in the time frame. They did say that there is no recall info on what to do to fix the problem, so mine might have the problem and they just have not came out and told me yet. As long as it gets fixed right, I will be happy.
