What else other than unbalanced tires can have the truck driveing terrible?I thought it was balancing,but had them balanced and still shaking at certain speeds.

U-joints or tranny can cause speed (and load) specific vibrations.

Un-balanced driveshaft, un-evenly torqued lugnuts.

Mine problem was the ABS system

 

I pulled the fuse for the ABS, stopped the shuttering, and made it very cool when I wanted to make an appearance or get a chuckle.

I had a tire that was 'out of round' and that caused quite a shake. The only way they found it was through 'road force balancing'. They kept telling me it was my imagination. Finally, when they discovered the tire was bad, they replaced it free of charge.

Who is doing your balancing? I had new Pirelli Scorpion Zero's installed at a Discount Tire and they were all off by a large margin (plus they put steel wheel weights on the alloy wheels!), so had them rebalanced by my high perf mechanic and all was fine.

 

Then, I got new Yokohama AVS S/T's at a different Disount Tire. Despite them supposedly having a Hunter balancer, they too were all off balance. I found out how bad by taking my 01 Tahoe to my nearby Cadillac Buick dealer who had the expensive Hunter balancer that can do the load test (their Hunter was definitely much more sophisticated and thorough than Discount Tire's). Besides finding all the balancing out they also found 1 bad tire during the load force, it was way out of spec.

 

Actually, in my older years I've had so many little things go wrong and have been told so many mistruths by shops and techs that I think I'm pretty much going to stick with this nearby Cad shop from now on (and pay the premium). Now I know even they could lie or do bad work, but so far I've taken both my Hoe and an 01 Grand Prix and they've been superior to work with. I guess I should actually buy a Cad (or two) from them some day

I had the exact same issue with 2002 Silverdo 1500 4 dr. SB.

Chevrolet replaced a total of 6 tires on this truck in it's first 11,000 miles.

Finally I talked Serv. Mgr. into replacing all the General Tires AS660 Series with Mich. tires and this finally corrected the issue's.

Then I made the mistake of letting Goodyear Bal. & Rot. tires and I'm back in the same condition! Had to take the truck to shop where they have a RoadForce Balance system to get tires back in tune, @ a cost of $130.00 including the trip to Goodyear. Once Balanced Correctly Never Rebalance, Just Rotate and you might make it for a while without the Silverado Shakes!

Wobble or bent wheel.

 

Rotor/drum out of round or balance.

 

U-Joint going bad.

 

If 4x4 and driven on pavement with 4x4 on and not full time, could bend/twist either drive shaft, break/bend U-Joints and worst of the lot, bend the transfer case or it's internals.

 

Not just bend the drive shafts, but twist them. Ditto the yokes.

I took the advise of a local shop on wheel balancing and trueing. This place has been in buisness for a long time, is family owned and only open five days a week. When you drive by you see nothing but vehicles getting serviced. They said why be open on the weekend if you can't make a living in 5 days. I guess it holds true for them and they do quality work.

 

Anyway, the recommed that you run a new set of tires for 500 miles and then have the wheels trued and rebalanced. They also balance the tires on the vehicle. I can say this much, after taking their advice my vehicles never road so smooth before. What a difference. Not expensive either. They charge $5 a tire to balance and $5 a tire to true. No fancy dancy machines to pay for or tell you what is wrong, just plain old experience.

 

Had a friend that had the Firstone lifetime wheel balance deal. Took his vehicle in 4 times to try and take care of a shimmy at highway speeds. Nothing worked. I suggested this place that I go to and have his tires trued. He did and couldn't get over the difference.

 

Some advantages to living back in the sticks with buisnesses that have been around a while and work on anything, from cars, semi's to even heavy modified lifted 44 muddered 4x4's.

I got them rebalanced at another tire shop and it is alittle better,but still shakes alittle at 45 and after 70.I guess i will check some of the things mentioned above.

How do they true a tire?

I know what balanceing is and how they do it on the veicle. Thats old school but very effective. Is trueing when you shave the tire round?

Tire wobble and vibrations usually come from your tires having too large a difference in camber and caster and possibly too much toe. Get an alignment from someone who knows what they are doing and that should fix it. Too many of these Discount tire places are discount tire places because they hire morons who can barely change their own underwear. I know because I used to work with some who came from those places.
