A/C Part 6million

Hey everyone,

Wierd question. My compressor has a leak. This much I know. A few days ago (Saturday to be exact) I took it to a buddys house to put some gauges on it to measure pressuers and what not. Before this day my compressor wouldn't spin at all. It would just freewheel. After he looked at it, it begin to spin!! I had ice cold AC for about 3 days. Just today, nothing all over again. We didn't charge the system at all but it happen to work for some reason. If the compressor has a leak in it, but I had AC for a few days, that means it obviously works. Would I be able to just charge the system when needed until I can replace parts? I figure its probably a pretty slow leak and I could spend maybe $12 for a couple of cans until my buddy can get around to helping me replace parts. Sound like it could work?

Anyone ever try buying parts online?? I found a compressor for $100 cheaper than in store.

you are low on freon. the low pres switch is keeping the compressor clutch from engaging. when you add more freon, it will behave normally. Excessive cycling when low on freon can prematurely wear out the switch. It is possible that the switch is all that is bad, and you are not low on freon. Only a gauge check will tell.

Today (3-27) we tried to charge it. It took half a can. One side (low I believe) was normal, but high was around 80 psi (when it should have been @ 300). I recently had the switch replaced. Sounds like compressor to me. Maybe a bad switch?
