Living out in the sticks is definatly for me, except for the lack of high speed internet options, of which I have only one......Satellite.  Does anyone out there have this type of connection ?  Any input would be appreciated.

out in the middle of no where its basicly your only options. its semi-expensive about 69 dollars a month. for gaming its not the best. it has some lag between up and down from the sat.

its not like dss where you can set it up your self so you also have install costs to think about too.

Unfortunately, the market is not very stable and companies offering the service come and go.  My ex has satellite service and has been left high and dry a couple times.  They also took a lightning hit on their dish that fried the comm gear, computers, well pump, and a number of other items.

I don't know if the company that offers 2-way satellite service (input and output) ever got off the ground.  Without that, you have to have a dial-up line (and its slow speed) to send data to the service.

Living where we are its also the only chance we have for a high speed connection.  After pricing it we decided to keep with a slow dialup.  For 50 fewer bucks a month I think we can deal with it.

I have DirecPC, one way, and from what I have heard, one way, although it is older is better than the two way.  I have heard some say that two way has lots of problems.  It is a lot faster than my 56k account, I think it is worth the money.

www.starband.com

i would never think of 1 way sat as a solution. its going to end up being as expensive anyways. still paying for the extra phone line.

I know the feelings of most here..

I moved from nowhere to nowhere.. I asked companies when cable or any other form of high speed internet will be available.. They said there first job in the next few years is starting to work on natural gas lines so for me its slow speed or no speed

I live near Edmonton Alberta Canada and currently have a Express-Vu dish for TV they also offer the "high speed" sat option.  And it is a download only type of service.  They claim that in certain cases download speed can be as fast as 1000kb/sec. To recieve there service I need to have an existing ISP ($20mnth) then I need there hardware/software package ($299 one time cost) and then pay them for the monthly unlimited access service($49.99mnth) The prices are all CDN. I know it's expesive but is it worth the money?(no crack habit...yet so if it is worth it I don't mind spending the money)

starband is the shiznit,  I beta'ed a system with starband  dual-way and it was off the hook.   I don't play the stupid online games so I don't have to worry about the lag up, plus when uploading to my ftp server it went alot faster compared to dialup   still not as fast as my cable  but better than 56k.

the way fiber is moving through the loops and 802.11 getting better everyday,  you won't have to worry about dialup much longer.

Could someone please explain this to me TIA

fiber is the fiber optic wiring that is replacing the outdated phone lines of the past.

and 802.11 is the wireless standard,  alot of the bigger cities is already having it implemented, and all the big airports already have it.  all you would need is a wireless card in your laptop or cellphone or pda and you can sync up to the network and surf the net or check email.

fiber topics is the fastest land based wiring,  it's a glass particle withing a hard shell,  and lightwaves travel through the glass.   there is a distance restriction on fiber optics  but with repeaters and base stations you can squeeze out more than the median distance.

My sisters boyfriend actually lay some fiberoptics last summer.  But I haven't heard anything about it coming my way.
