Hard Tonneau Cover advice

Have you considered a Leer 700 Series ? 2 friends of mine got the 700 from Leer and love them. I doubt Leer could beat the price of the Undercover. The one is on a Ranger and it was $800+ painted.

I looked at the Leer. A little too heavy to remove and replace. Also, I don't want to paint the cover (going with a gold and black look).

BTW - What do you do with all those trucks ?

Ever thought of a Roll'n lock? I have had two now on different trucks and they work great! Never had a problem and heavy duty. Downside is they mechinism does take up about a half foot to a foot of the box.

Also might take a look at Fold-A-Cover (www.foldacover.com). I've had one on a 2003 Silverado Z-71 EC/SB for about a year and it is super. Pretty darned water-proof, tough enough for my extreme hunting use and looks great.

It can also be removed in about two minutes by taking out four screws.

If I had it to do over again, I'd buy the Fold-A-Cover again in a heartbeat.

I have the Leer700, it is heavy, have not had to remove it yet. It is oh so cool in appearance compared to many other hard covers...

I'd second the nomination for the Fold-A-Cover  . I just installed one this weekend after looking at every hard lockable cover available and absolutely love it so far. I got it locally for $590. It was easy to install, seems watertight (washed the truck once with it on and no water got in), and is very versatile. I researched covers to death before deciding on the Fold-A-Cover and so far I would definitely make the same choice again.

I have a peragon cover and like it very well. I looked at several before I bought it and picked it over the fold a cover because it is solid metal and the fold a cover isn't. It is fairly water tight. I liked the looks of the fold a cover but it is made of 2 sheets of aluminium with styrofoam in the middle. I haul gasoline in my truck for the lawnmower and was worried about a spill.

I'll also endorse the Fold-A-Cover and Advance Covers. Advance is a company started by the guy who started Fold-A-Cover. Both have very convenient and sturdy designs. I've owned both and have been very pleased with both. It's so nice to have the flexibility of folding it back out of the way and also folding the front panel back for access to the front of the bed.

I cannot recommend the FoldaCover. I got one in Feb 02. In March the 55mph winds out here in the plains got under it and blew it up (from the side) but did not damage it. In March 03, the same thing happened and it destroyed it. My take is that the hold down hardware is not heavy duty enough. What got it both times was that the side wind was blowing up over a bermed road, probably acting like an airplane wing to pull it up. I have an extang on it now but will look at some rolling covers hard in the near future. The cover is well made but those sliding latches just don't do the job under stress. Good Luck, RW

It's Roll-N-Lock for me...Works great in all weather conditions and looks good too!

The Advance folding cover has all of the positive attributes of the Fold-A-Cover without the sliding latches mentioned above. It is a lever-based latch design that holds in six different places from underneath the cover. Much sturdier!

If you do fifth wheel hauling, it is an extremely flexible option that makes life a lot easier.

Anyone got pictures of weblinks of these Roll-N-Lock ones? I'm kicking the idea around of getting one. I want a solid/hard top that I can lock but is also watertight and easily removable.

I have the Fold-A-Cover. Just installed two weeks ago. Overall I like the cover, but I do have some gripes. In my opinion the instructions are horrible. Kind of akin to those instructions you get when you buy a cheap electronic device from China. Hand drawn diagrams with no accompining printed word directions. What really is a simple installation is made much more difficult in trying to decipher the 3rd grade drawings of what they want you to do next. I also agree with the poster who stated that the spring latch mechanism needs to be strenghened. It's just a spring loaded plastic nub at each side of the cover that goes into the hole in the side of the pickup bed. Sometimes it slides in far into the holes and sometimes it just goes in a little and I could see where the wind could catch the corner and if the nub was not into the hole far enough, the top could easily fly up. One other thing, it is not a quick and easy cover to completly remove if you need the entire bed for hauling. The cover is attached to the bed by hex screw heads and different sized hex screws at that. The hex heads screws have a nut that you tighten down to keep the screw from backing out. Who carries hex keys around with them in the fileld ? A screwdriver yes, but hex keys ? Com'on ! So one needs an adjustable wrench and different sized hex keys to take the cover off. With any use at all, the hex head will become quickly stripped. Why they didn't use bolts you could get a wrench on is beyond me. I would say that the idea and functionality of the product are good but I do see ways that this cover could of been greatly improved to go from a good one to a terrific one.
