Whining Fuel pump

My fuel pump whines when the engine is running and for about 5 seconds after I kill it. I have a pretty loud exhaust, true duals with two 40 series flowmasters

(not trying to boast), and I can here here it over them. I have heard that GM pumps are loud but this seems over the top. It is a consistent noise that doesn't sound like somethings wrong it's just really loud. I'm just wondering if should change it before I break down or if its normal. Could it be an after market high flow? just got the truck.

P.S. It a 98 chev 1500 with 5.7l vortec

The one in my 02 has been pretty loud since I bought it.

Over 50k miles, no problems.

I had a '98 S-10 that I bought new and its fuel pump was pretty loud from day one. I had the 4.3L so it was probably a similar pump if not the same one as in your 5.7. I traded it last year at 90,000 miles. Same noise, never had a problem with it. It's perfectly normal. The newer ones (like on my '03 Silverado) are much quieter.

Normal.. just listen to other ones at the mall as they drive by.

My 97 was pretty loud, so i knew the fuel pump was ok..

When mine becomes noticeable, I change the fuel filter and the hum goes away. A GM Tech told me one time the hum is the pressure of the pump and usually gets really noticeable when the filter is clogged.

Get to know how it sounds when healthy, as they usually change just before they die...some just plain die...

ONE time thing this, but many can limp home (short distance) by getting a dieing pump to work a short while. Wack the bottom of the gas tank with rubber mallet while someone is cranking it. DO NOT turn it off, as once turned off, it's dead and no amount of wacking the tank bottom will work...

Mine got REALY REALY LOUD rite before it died. I had a Sealership fix it for me, and now it is silent, or you can only hear it when the engine isnt running. Like when you just turned the truck off.

The suck part was it died while parked inside of my fire station while we where installing the light bar. It was parked in the bay that our tanker belongs in. Not a good place for it to die.

My 99' Suburban had a loud fuel pump when I bought it. It died... After the replacement was done, under warrenty, it was much quieter.

You might want to change it. Better safe than sorry. I was close to the middle of know where when mine died. The truck would start and stall. Then we needed a tow truck.
