74-Year-Old Survives Attack by Alligator!

SANIBEL, Fla. (April 22) - A 74-year-old woman survived an attack by a nearly 10-foot-long alligator that bit her on the leg and arm and dragged her into a lake.

Jane C. Keefer was stable and in good condition at HealthPark Medical Center early Thursday, hospital officials said.

Police said Keefer was attacked at about 8 p.m. Wednesday as she was gardening near the bank behind her home.

Bitten first on the leg, Keefer was able to fight the alligator off, Sanibel Police Chief Bill Tomlinson said.

The reptile lunged at her a second time, biting her arm and dragging her into the water, before her husband, William, was able to help her get away, said Lar Gregory, an investigator with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Authorities captured the alligator at 10:45 p.m. behind Keefer’s home. It will be destroyed.

“This is the kind of gator that will kill you,” said trapper John French.

Don't mess with the old Ladies!

Shortly there after she drove her buick through the front door of the local Golden Coral....mistaking the brake for the Accelerator.

Not to be mean...but I always root for the gator in this situation. I live in south Florida....this USED to be the swamp....people come in and pave it...and build drainage ponds so the storm water has someplace to go....gators live in swamps/ponds.....old woman gets bitten by gator.....gator gets killed??? COME THE F**K ON...it was being an alligator.

I don't want to be harsh but I am gonna be....that gator did more for this world than that old woman. Why kill the gator???

Just so you can compare and contrast....I disagree with the parks service when they kill bears that attack people too.....you put you park in the woods....the bear eats meat....it's being a d**n bear??

I am not a evironmentalist by any means.....I just like it when mother nature wins a round once in a while....it reminds us we can't control everything

No offense to any elderly people here, but yeah, that's funny. There is a certain cafeteria around here that all the old people go to...I'm just waiting for one of them to drive their Caddy through the front.

I'm not exagerating at all...during the winter months down here is ft.lauderdale...it happens probably about once every 2 weeks. in the summer prolly about once a month. I'm not gonna lie though....if I was 86 years old and I could still get in my car....I wouldn't let anyone take it away from me either...I love driving....My grandfather used to have hand controls for the brakes and gas on the steering wheels....I never knew him, but apparently my lead foot (or hand) runs in the family.....how does that work anyway??? has anyone ever seen a car with hand controls?? How do you turn and keep your errr...hand on the gas??

uhhh, where's the justification in this? Yeah, that's right, just becuase your old you are useless, obviously in her 74 years on this world she has done nothing.

It happens a lot. Just last week I saw such an incident. There was this parking lot that was raised about 3' so that it didn't slope...anyway, I saw a Buick Century that had rolled off the raised lot and onto the ground below, but not all the way. The rear of the car was on the parking lot and the front was in the grass below and next to the lot. I think we can all agree that the owner of the Century was likely older.

Also last week, my mom saw this old lady mistake the gas for the brake and nearly run into a kid in the process.

Well that WAS a little harsh...but you get my point.....alligators have been around way longer than us people....just seems to me that in the scheme of things the alligator has served a better purpose than that old woman...or you or me for that reason.

Anyway my point was why kill an animal for being an animal.......my appologies to the woman.

LMAO...... :thumbs::cool::cheers:

You obviously didn't read my post...I am not stating that any animals life is worth more than a human life....I SAID...that it's to bad we (as humans) find it necessary, to kill an animal for being an animal....

If they had to shoot the gator or any animal because it was in the process of attacking a human, I have no problem with that....but the damage has been done....why not just drive the gator 50 miles out into the everglades, so it doesn't happen again.

That's where "this guy" is coming from.

That's not the way you had stated. The way you stated it was that the gator was doing more for society than this woman has in the last 74 years of her life.

And I agree, the gator should just be taken back to the 'glades so it can live, no need to kill it.

Let's put this to bed.....if I saw an old lady by a lake with an alligator attached to her leg....I would try and go alligator dundee on his ass and get him off.....then I would tell the old lady alligators live in just about any body of water in florida.
