i am looking to put a new exhaust on my 2000 silverado 2500. i want a powerful deep sound but not annoyingly loud. what do i need, what names are good, and how much around is this going to cost

It all depends pn where you live, what you have to spend, and if you want dual out or single. Either way, you won't be dissapointed.

Since you're looking for a nice, smooth deep tone, go with either a Spin Tech Sportsman Street, a 14" or possibly an 18" Magnaflow, or a Super 40 series Flowmaster. The Magnaflow, being straight through, will obviously be the deepest overall, the Spin Tech and Super 40 next. The most efficient way to run your stsem is to have a single in single or dual out application. 3" is the biggest you want to go on a Single out, with your choice of tip. Dual out, same as for the tips, but don't go any bigger than 2.25" pipe, it helps control sound and power loss. Everyone assumes bigger is btter, and that the lesser backprsssure you have is going to give you more power. They are right of course, but it alters the power curve. Think about it this way, take an everyday drinking straw. Blow through it. It doesn't flow terrifcly, but there's more force pushing the air out. Then take something such as a paper towel roll. Yes, much bigger, but it sis still accurate. Blow through this now, and yes, the air oes release faster, although there's much less force pushing the air out. Too big a pipe can also make a decrease in mileage, which is another reason it's important to choose the right exhaust pipe diameter.

As for the three mufflers I stated above now. You're going to notice the most drone probably w/ the 14" Magnaflow, yet it's not going to kill you. My cousin has the 14" on his 5.4 F-150, and yes it's there at cruise speeds, mainly through twn, but it's actualy sort of pleasant, and I'm one to hate loudness in the cab. The Super 40 will of course be there, but the interior factor is far less than the other two 40 series models. People are akeptic about the new Super 40, but there is difference in size and in the internal baffles, thusly reducing drone and improving flow. Flowmaster's aren't the greatest for performance, but hell they get the job done pretty dang efficiently. The Spin Tech will be comparible to the 40 series in terms of sound, maybe a tad more raw sounding if you decide to go w/ the Pro Street (their loudest muffler but believe me, there's a veeery low interior sound issue). The Sportsman Street will be the quietest on the inside, which is one reason I reccomend you run this muffler. It's a hellofa setup if you tow a trailer or if you go on long trips. There are other manufacturers of course, but for your application I reccomended these three. There is also Borla, they have a sweeeeeeeeeeeet deep smooth tone, but some think they;re on the tad quiet side, I on the other hand think they're absolutely perfect.

You're in luck too! We've got two clips of the Super 40 @ Exhaustsoundclips.com, one from outside and one interior, and believe me its AWESOME!!! Magnaflow has sounds on their site, just go to the sounds section to view. I've also got a link to a Sportsman Street on an 01 Silvy, and I garuntee you'll love the idle on this system!!!

EDIT: oh yeah, costs lol. It depends on where you live. I can get any dual out system installed for $235 normally $300 but try not to spend more than $335 if a shop does it. www.fulllineexhaust.com has great prices on Super 40 kits and Magnaflow kits. Go to www.spintechmufflers.com to look at their kits, I believe dual outs run around $310!

Well, you CAN do it at home if you buy a cat-back kit, but it's probably easier just to go to a shop. To get a Flowmaster American Thunder or even their Force II kits, you're looking at around $335+, Magnaflow around $400+, and the Spin Tech being the cheapest, around $309 I think for a dual out kit. The advantages of going to a shop would be having the whole system welded so there's no leaks, no clamps to come loose, you can choose the tips that look the best, you can have them put on all the different mufflers they carry before you decide which you want and half the time the shop is going to be a hell of a lot cheaper. Usually a shop around here charges anywhere from $300-375, depending on what you do. If you shop around, I can garuntee you'll find a shop that's less than $300 if you call around and compare quotes w/ others.

If ya like the "do-it-yourself" style, a cat-back's actually really fun to install. But forease and just to make sure everythings perfect, a shops the way to go
