Auto Tranny question

Hi Guys (and Gals if there are any).

I know this is a Chevy forum, but I wanted to get the most exposure so I'm cross posting on a couple of sites.

Generally speaking, what would you speculate the problem would be if when shifting from P -> D, R -> D, or from N -> D if it took about 2 - 4 seconds and then engaged to D with a kind of clunk. No real huge banging noises, just feels like it engaged in gear very hard. Like about what you'd expect if somone hit you from behind going 2 or 3 mph.

Recently, I had to have the torque converter replaced (under warranty) and less than 2k later, this starts happening.

It also seems to hesitate when going from P -> R, but no clunking or jerking around.

02 Jeep Liberty, V6, auto

Any hints or ideas as to what the problem may be is greatly appreciated.

Jeep's at the stealership now getting looked over, but I just was curious to what others thought.

No codes in the computer - or at least none reported when doing the on/off thing 5 or 6 times.

Thanks for the help on this!

Not sure what the cause is, I do know that this problem plagues a lot of Jeep vehicles. The good news is you may be able to find info about it since a lot of people have this problem.

Found out that it was 3q low on tranny fluid.

I'll be calling the other dealer on Monday. I think I was told they replaced the torque converter, but per the dealer network when they looked my VIN up, it had been totally overhauled.

Now, it's driving fine on level ground, but when I drive up my driveway it kind of shudders like it's slipping in and out of gear. :chevy:

I won't bore you with any more details on this non-GM vehicle. ;)

Thanks anyway guys!

Please pardon me if I am mistaken, but I believe the tranny in your liberty is a rear wheel drive version of the tranny used in the minivan, the 41TE, also known as the A604.

I have a '96 Caravan with this tranny, and it's on it's third rebuild (I did the last one). You should be grateful that there have been several improvements to this transmission since '96, and many since the earlier models. What an overworked, undercooled P.O.S.

It is very critical that you use the proper fluid in this trans., which for your year would be ATF+4. Many people AND MECHANICS think that Dexron is good enough, which is simply not true. Dexron is not slippery enough, and will cause your clutches to shudder as the computer tells them to grab and let go very quickly during a shift. It's computer looks at the speed of the turbine as well as the output to determine how quickly to apply and release the clutches. This transmision shifts from clutch to clutch, instead of using bands the way conventional transmissions do. In the interest of giving smooth shifts, they designed this tranny with a lot of slip and overlap. In so doing they generate a lot of heat, and an auxilliary cooler is a good idea.

A good website to look at is allpar.com for more information. I think you should verify what fluid was put in it (if I am right about the transmission you have). If Dexron is in it, flush it and get ATF+4 in it! It is synthetic and will last longer, as well as take heat better. Good Luck!

Wow! Thanks for the info. I'll look into the fluid issue. I don't have any paperwork on what was recently done b/c the dealer who left the fluid low had to pay for the repairs done at the other dealership.

In any case, I'll look at my owners manual and my sticker and figure out which tranny I have.

I do notice a lot of slip in the tranny when it was behaving normal. My Tahoe has firm shifts and I prefer that. The Lib shifts like a standard when someone likes to ride the clutch.

Will post other updates! Thanks!

Front and rear diffs would be good to do. The t-case fluid has been upgraded to a blue fluid from the General. Per the tsb, you're supposed to drain and refill, drive a few miles, then drain and refill again. I changed my t-case and had the nickel slip yoke and yoke lubed and the culmination of all 3 services has quieted the truck down.

    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
    • you might read through the info on gmupfitter.com for your truck, to find a good power source.
