My S-10 is making a really weird noise

Just yesterday my truck started making a "humming" noise when going at speeds above 20mph or so..

It sounds/feels like i have really knoby tires on, but i don't.

The weird part is this..

When going strait the noise/vibration is constant, and increases with speed.  The noise/vibration also gets louder when i turn the wheel to the right! The harder right, the more harsh the racket it.  but here is the kicker!  The moment i turn the wheel even slightly to the left.... it goes away! and the truck and ride sounds and feels normal!

Its getting to the point where at speeds above 30mpg i feel like i'm on a sweedish vibrating bed(not that thats bad!), but i'm concerned.

I've check tire pressures, wheel weights, CV boots, 4x4 gear box, etc.. Nothing looks out of wack.

I'm going to take the truck to get the tires rotated, and looked at soon, but for now, i've parked it.

Any ideas??  ???

have you even been driving it since you have been testing all those cars and trucks?

Maybe it just needs some TLC

yup.  Its been driven daily, not by me, but my parents have been borrowing it.  My father noticed the sound about a week ago, but didn't tell me i guess.

Sounds to me like there's a problem in the left front rotating assembly. Brake rotor, caliper, wheel bearing, spindle, half-shaft, etc.

When you turn right, it puts more of a load on the left front. Consequently, when you turn left, the load is transferred off of the left side to the right.

Does it increase or decrease with acceleration and braking?

Yes

Yes

Which?

If it increases on acceleration and decreases on deceleration, possibly something in the rear.

If it decreases on acceleration and increases on deceleration, I'd look to the front.

That sounds almost exactly like what Tammy's Beretta was doing last summer, except hers didn't quit when turning left.  I'm sure it was the CV joints, because they jiggled around with next to no resistence at all compared to new ones.  In addition to changing the axle shafts, I replaced the hub/bearing assembly, tie-rod ends, and ball joints all at once while I had it all apart (both sides).   But, they had around 180,000 miles on them too.

the racket is coming from the left front tire.  I can tell.

I'm just hoping its not the CV joints, cause if it is, i'm selling this dang thing.  its been nothing but problems!!!!

well, finally narrowed it down to a wheel bearing..

yea...

How do those cost to replace?  ???

I just had the same problem with my S-10 and I replaced the inner and outer front wheel bearings. It was easy to do and it solved my problem.

Glad to hear it solved you problem. It was kind of a different scenarion on Mervz truck though because the 4x4 versions have a sealed assembly so there really isn't an inner or outter bearing, just one very costy part to replace.

Welcome aboard.

I had the same in mine...the front left.

Mine was a 2000 so to replace the bearings, I needed to get the whole hub assembly that includes the ABS line, etc. You cant just get the bearings. This cost me over $300 CDN just for the part (bought from a GM Dealership)
