PART TIME/FULL TIME

What is the differance between the fulltime

and part time case's. I have a 82 GMC 4X4

what do I have?

If there's a 2-HI position it's part time.

If there's a HI-Lock position it's full time.

 

The full-time T-case has a differential in it, so it can provide drive to both shafts while accomodating the different path length between the front a rear wheels when turning. This also means that traction loss at either end will let the one shaft spin while the other stops. The HI-Lock and LO-Lock positions lock the two outputs together so that it functions like a part-time T-case in low traction conditions.

 

If my somewhat rusty memory can be trusted most (all?) '82 GMs came with a part-time T-case (when it's in 4 HI or or 4 LO the two outputs are locked together, in 2 HI only the rear shaft is driven.) and weak auto-locking hubs. Probably 90% of them were converted to solid hubs later.

 

I've only owned one 4x4 (1983 S-10, part-time with a painfully slow vacuum operated front axel disconnect instead of hubs), so I haven't kept up with the details of exacty which transfer case came in which trucks and had which attributes . . . I know the difference between the full-time and part-time operation, but I don't remember which New Venture number is which (actually I'm so old I tend to say "New Process" which was a predecessor of New Venture.).

 

Incidently, I put about 100,000 miles on an '82 Chevy, but it didn't have a T-case. C-10, 250 I-6 (92 HP ) TH-350C, 2.73 Gears. It was bog slow, but it got 20+ MPG, which was downright amazing in 1982. A friend still owns it, and still drives it occasionally.

GM used full time from 73 til 79 and never used that model case again after that. Locking hubs on old trucks with part time 4wd was not standard equipment back then and you do see them from time to time that way if they are still stock. If your truck is stock, it is part time 4wd.
