Un-Stock 2000 Z71

Hi! I´m new to the forum also. I just traded my 96 Sierra 5.7 for a 2000 Z71 w/5.3L. I need your help guys, I want to get more output form the stock engine but don´t know where to begin... It´s kind of a difficult task because I´m in Central America with little or no parts available, so I´ll have to order them, I´ll need all the info I can get, websites, stores.... I was thinking about an exhaust system and Chip upgrade or modifier....

Which is the best way to go? mmmm... I´m also on a $1000 budget....

Thanks for your replies, will be greatly appreciated..

Here is the list in order of what I would do:

1. Get a K&N FIPK (not just a drop in filter) and try to find it on Ebay. They are on their all the time brand new for $199 or so which is basically the cheapest anywhere

2. Get a free'r flowin exhaust in any brand (sound) combo you would like. A high flow catalytic converter would be a good step as well. ($2-400 typically)

3. A good reprogram can be had from a number of places. I personally do not have much experience with these. ($2-400)

4. I have seen/heard of significant gains by adding different roller rockers to the valvetrain assembly and getting 15-20 RWHP which isn't bad for the typical $150-300 range depending on the brand and size. I believe that these trucks have 1.8's or so. If you wanted short spurts of power, NOS is always a cheap way to go at virtually under $550 for a good dry kit. Easy install and is what most F-body cars are running and will give you adjustable HP.

Good luck and have fun.... :banghead:

Thanks for the info, I´ll start looking into the sites you mentioned. I was thinking about buying the Hypertech programmer.... what dou you think about it?

On the exhaust I´ll buy it from a local manufacturer, 4" from the manifold all the way back. And I´ll install the K&N for better breathing.... :banghead:

Thanks for the replies they are plenty helpful

Most people say that they got very little with the Hypertech 3. I would go with Westers, Nelsons or PCM For Less before HPP3. If you want a handheld try Diablo Sport, SPE Proflash or Superchips before the HPP3.

With exhaust you do not want to go 4" or you will lose a lot of low end torque. A big no no in a heavy truck. If you go with true duals then your pipe size should be no bigger than 2 1/4". If you go off the Y-pipe then you can use a 3" in 3" out. or 3" in dual 2 1/2" out.
