Remote Keyless Entry

My Remote Keyless Entry on my '98 Blazer was

working only a very short distance. I had to

be almost at the window to open the vehicle.

I did the tricks in the service manual to

reset the transmitters. One procedure

involves simultaneously holding down the lock

and unlock buttons on the transmitter. A second

involves holding down the lock button on the

vehicle and turning the ignition on and off

and the using the transmitters.

I did all this and the sensitivity was still poor.

In fact, it was terrible.

A day later, it seems to be working pretty well.

I can unlock the vehicle from 25 feet away.

What's up with that? Any ideas?

Should I replace the receiver? It would be

easy enough; it is right under the dash.

What do receivers cost? Would the transmitters

have to be reprogrammed? Can I do that myself?

...or would a dealer have to do it?

When was the last time you replaced the batteries in the transmitters? That'd be step #1. The receiver is in the driver's footwell, on the black panel the ALDL is connected to. I found mine yesterday when installing something else. It wouldn't be hard to replace, but I'd try the batteries first.

Also, when the transmitter started working well again, was this in a different location from when they weren't working well, or was it a different transmitter? If you were in a different location, there may have been interference of some kind that was messing it up.

The batteries are fine. I checked one with a voltmeter

and it was like 3.25 volts -- pretty good for a 3 volt

battery. Just for hoots, I replaced the battery anyway;

there was no difference.

The Blazer was parked in the street. I'm in a pretty

open area. There was nothing really near it.

I found another thread with a similar problem.

The original poster ended up having the receiver

replaced under an extended warranty.

Any idea where I can get a good price on the

RKE receiver?

$76.46 plus shipping from www.partszoneonline.com I just looked it up. Sorry, can't find a part number. Go into the GM catalog, select your vehicle and search Mechanical. Then go into "Electrical" then "Body Electrical" on the menu on the left and you should find the RKE components.

I finally got tired of my remote keyless entry

performance and broke down and went to

www.partszoneonline.com for a new receiver.

I installed it today and have to say, "Nice!"

Now, I can lock/unlock my Blazer from about

sixty feet away.

I see there is one adjustment in the receiver

box -- a coil. I wonder if tuning it would have

made any difference. If I had any spare time,

I would experiment with it.

Thanks again for your help.
