New tires

Just bought new tires today at Wally World. Was on a budget so I got the BF Goodrich Land Terrains in Load Range C (six ply) Anyway, the tires were aired up to 35 psi. I'm wondering with a 6 ply tire doesn't the pressure need to be higher. I don't put a lot of confidence in Walmart's installation "professionals" What do you think? I was thinking around 45 psi?

That info should be listed on the tire. I would think 35PSI is just about right though. Your tire will have the max load listed @ ?? PSI. This doesn't mean you need to run your tires at max pressure. You can run a few PSI less for a better ride.

There is a chart **somewhere** on the internet showing the air pressure needed for different load ranges as one changes tires. Anyway, 35 pounds is right on target for a load range C tire from what I recall when viewing the chart. Only reason I mention this chart is because I was wondering the same thing a while back. grrrrr... I'm no help on this.

my 1998 k1500 has new michelins 16inch . they put 50 pds in it and it road terrible. i went back and had them reduce it to 35 pds and REBALANCE the tires with that pressure. when you haul a heavy load you will have to put 50 back in but i dont haul any heavy loads. what a difference in ride.

It's best to run what GM recommends. Check the decal in the door jamb. I believe it is 35 all around.

Thanks for all the help guys. I really wanted to get the Revos for the truck, but a set was going to run at least $120-$150 more in my area than the Land Terrains. Both have a 50 K warranty and I'm very pleased at how quiet these tires are at highway speed.

 

 

 

Installed I was out the door @ $450! Considering I had to replace tires on my wife's vehicle the weekend before, I'm happy.....just extremely broke.

The differences between P-metric and LT-metric tires is important here. Overheating due to underinflation is a primary cause of tire failure. 35 psi. is the recommended cold inflation pressure for OEM P265/75R16 114S tires and the tire load limit at that pressure is 2365 lbs. For LT265/75R16/C 112/109S tires at 35 psi. the tire load limit is 1910 lbs. (too low for your truck's GAWR). Go back to Wally World and insist they get their tire "Load and Inflation Tables" out and properly inflate your tires.

40 psi front and rear will keep you wearing the outer edges,

just a magic number that seems to work on light trucks.

 

BTW, What kind of coin for the BFG'S on the truck?

At 1910lbs he's above the GAWR for the rear, but since they are LT's they should inflate to 60-80psi for a full load. Unloaded though he should be good at 35-40psi.

LT's come in at least three different Load Ranges, C, D, or E. They have different max loads and different max pressures. These tires are C and have a 50 psi. maximum inflation pressure. The overheating (safety) issue still exists. For a P-metric and an LT-metric of the same size inflated to the same pressure, the LT will run hotter due to it's heavier construction.

are you saying on my michelins LT tires i should have put the 50pds in them even if i dont haul any loads?they were terrible bouncing out on i-80 . mechanic said too much air and said lower it to 35 pds.much better ride.am i wrong on this. cold pressure on tire says 50 pds.

For normal driving situations, your tire pressure should be 35 psi. If you run 50 psi you will wear the inside of that tire out very quick, under inflated tire will wear the outsides of the tire evenly unless you have toe or camber problems. For your K1500, an LT series tire is the correct tire so keep it at 35 psi when cold.
