Exhaust on a V6

Recommended Posts

I went up to Triple AAA today and they said they could put flowmasters on my '02 Silverado V6 for $280. I don't know what series, but will this sound good on a V6? I have friends who have V8 Z71 trucks and it sounds awesome. But I don't want it to sound like a high pitched litle truck. I want it to have a deep sound. Thanks

It will have somewhat of a higher pitched sound at first,say similar to a really pissed off Beretta but it should eventually break in and get a little deeper.

I had a FM 40 single/single on my ZR2 and was asked several times if it had a V8.Now those who really know what they are listening to would have probably picked up on it still being a V6 pretty quick but at lower RPM's the tone was pretty deep.

My experience with the FM40, single-in/dual-out was identical to Frank's. I was frequently asked if my ZR2 had a V8. Remember: the 4.3 is essentially the 350 engine, less 2 cylinders. That's why they pull so strong. They also sound good, at idle, but when the RPMs climb even the FM40 can't disguise the fact that it's a 6 cylinder!

I had an Edelbrock RPM muffler on my 94 Sonoma, along with their TES system and it sounded great. It had a slight rumble at idle but was not too loud when running down the road.

LOL so everyone answers everyone elses V6 exhaust questions just not mine huh??? :thumbs: I see how it is.

Seriously though. I would think a ZR2 would be comperable to that of a single cab Silverado? I'd considering just goin' with single outlet system like what I have now, except with a Magnaflow or something. Has anyone just replaced stock muffler??

ZR2... FM40... ? You've lost me. I have a single cab 2002 Silverado and it's a V6 4.3 litre. So yeah :thumbs: I don't know if the exhaust there talking about putting on is a FM40, but I'll ask. ZR2 is the kind of truck I have I guess... because I know it's not a Z71 :D. I wish it was. I don't take off that fast. I usually get up to 2000 or 2500 RPM then let it shift because gas is re-god-dang-diculis. Is this going to hurt my gas mileage? And does anyone know what I can do to get better gas mileage. I heard of this tornado thing but I don't know if that works. Is it just hype or does it make a difference? Because I've never heard of anything adding HP and saving gas at the same time. Oh yeah, and I kind of want it to be loud, but not high pitched. A nice low pitch loudness is what I'm after. Also why does it matter if it is single to double or double to double. And what does it come stock with? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks

Hey Frank... Don't be picking on Berettas!! It will take just about anything off line!! And at 203,000 miles, it just does'nt know any better to just keep running!

Now those V-6's have a nice little putt putt at idle with the stock exhaust, but a comment was made about those that know, will know it's a V-6.. Funny but I also notice that when a truck go's by.

What could the flowmasters hurt, save the old muffler and you can always put back on.

ZR2... FM40... ?

Hehe, I guess we gotta be more care with the newbies and our acryonyms.

FM40 = 40 Seires Flowmaster (2-chamber)

ZR2 = Chevy S10 with 4x4 package.

ZR2s also have the 4.3L V6, so they can be a pretty good example of how the 4.3L Silverados will sound too :thumbs:

Come on now,I didn't bag on Beretta's with that statement.I simply said that the truck sounded like a "really pissed off Beretta at first" when the muffler was brand new.

It's not like that was a bad thing and all,just used it as kind of an analogy.

I get that too??? :thumbs:

As far as my opinion, keep it as quiet as you can with out sacrificing quality and tone, too loud and it will sound ugly, too quiet and its a waste of money, so do a good amount of research before you buy.

My 94 4.3L s-10 had a dynomax muffler (long time ago, don't remember the specs) on it and it was mild and had a nice sporty tone to it.

Is this going to hurt my gas mileage?

Does anyone know what I can do to get better gas mileage?

Why does it matter if it is single to double or double to double and what does this mean?

What does it come with stock?

Thanks

It's a reasonable expection that you will see some improvement in MPG if you open up the exhaust with a more free-flowing muffler, and help the engine breathe easier with a high-flow intake. On the flip side, you'll find that you're more tempted to use a heavy foot to enjoy the improved sound which may offset your gain!

Your stock muffler is probably a single-in/single-out type (one entry port and one exit port). You would only need a replacement with a dual-out if you wanted dual exhaust. As has been recommended above, I would encourage you to consider replacing just the stock muffler with something a little more free-flowing. The Flowmaster 40 would be a good one to consider.

Thanks. I'm really sure I can put it on myself so where do I go to buy this? I want the muffler and duals. So could ya'll point me in the right direction. :thumbs: Ebay might have it I'll check.

Cazca,

I own a 4.3L Silverado myself. How are you gonna do it? Dual exit? After you complete this install I would love if it you could inform us how it sounds. I've heard so many different mixed opinions that I myself am not sure what I wanna do now. The Flowmaster 40 was my original plan.

Thanks and thanks everyone for the help.
