HDs only have a 6.0 or 8.1 motor correct?

I know that I should know this but I just want to make sure I'm not missing something. There aren't any HD trucks produced with a 4.8 or 5.3? A Tech guy at a manufacturer that we deal with says that they have something for a 4.8/5.3 HD but I don't think they exist.

The 2500HD's and 3500's are either a 6.0L, 8.1L or 6.6L Dmax as far as I am aware. Has been that way since 01'. He may be refering to the Silverado W/T which is the work truck package for the 1500 trucks. I think GM still has those packages and they would have either the 4.8L or 5.3L.

I know this is not really what you asked but in the new body style in 99 you could get a 2500 with the 5.3 motor in it. The dealer that I got my truck from also had one like that it was just like the truck I bought but had the 5.3 in it.

How'd you get a 99 2500 with a 6.0L in it? I didn't think the 2500's were re-designed until 2000 or 2001, and the 6.0/8.1 came out with the new design.

Can't you get a 2wd HD with an optional 5.3L? Stripped down RCLB Base models (not W/T package)? I know the 6.0L has been standard on HD's since the NBS but it seems like I have seen it referenced somewhere (other than here...)

The only Silverado 2500's with the 5.3 were the 99/00 light-duty 2500 (not-HD model) with a GVWR of 7200 lbs. The 99/00 heavy-duty (not-HD model) with a GVWR of 8600 lbs came only with the 6.0.

In 2001 the 7200 lb GVWR 2500 was dropped with the introduction of the 2500HD. All 2500's (non-HD models) were then 8600 lb GVWR and came with the 6.0 standard.

I've found no information that shows anything other than the 6.0 as the base engine for any 2500HD or 3500. Even the fleet models with alternative fuels are either 6.0 or 8.1.

Let me correct some of this: In 1999 if you had the old body style the 2500 came with the 350 or 454. It was not called HD or LD at that time. If you got the new body style at that time 2500 it only was a 7200 gvw, and it came with either 5.3 or 6.0 motors. I do not remember or know if the one with the 5.3 had six or eight lugs on the wheels but I do know that the truck I bought has eight hole wheels on it. I do know that the other truck I looked at had a 5.3 in it and it was a loaded up truck with leather seats, and the other one had cloth which helped me make up my mind as to which truck I wanted. :jester:

didnt they make a 1500 hd truck.....I know I have seen one but dont remember much about it..I also dont remember what they came with...

Well I found this if it helps...

All 99 2500s had the 8 lug wheels regardless of whether it had the 5.3 or 6.0. On a similar note, in 99 and early 00 models the 6.0 motor was optional in the 1500.

And yes the General did produce a 1500hd (really a crew cab 2500), the 1500HD name was just a marketing ploy until the released the new crew cab 1500 with the 5' bed.

All 1500HDs came with the 6.0/4L80E, in a crew cab short box platform. No other engines/transmissions were optional.

Hope that helps :jester:

Almost. Correct that the OBS 2500 was only 8600 lb GVWR with 350, 454 or diesel 6.5. But there were a limited number of 8600 lb GVWR new body style 2500's in the 99 model year with only the 6.0 available (Silverado 2500 Regular Cab long box or Silverado 2500 Extended Cab with third door only). As an aside, there were also a few 1500 OBS made in 99 model year ( C/K1500 Extended Cab Short Box with third door only).

It took longer than expected for GM to make the model transitions for some body styles, hence the complexity of the 99/00 years. Gets really problematic when ordering from some on-line parts sources that don't differentiate correctly between various 99/00 C/K and Silverado models.
