Got Sand?

Well, went to Pismo Beach last weekend. Did not go there to drive my truck all over the place, but I did take it on one trip to the far back to watch hill climbs at 10PM at night. I was doing good until we started heading back to camp. I going across a ridge and my right rear tire slipped off. First of all I did not air down my tires, first mistake, second is I had my window down when I proceeded spin the front tires, all I can see is a wall of sand flying into the cabin.

 

Now my problem is this:

I have vacuumed most of the sand out of the cabin with the following exception, I cannot get it out of the vent system. I have removed the vent directers and stuck the vacuum nozzle down in there as far as it goes. If I turn on the air to recirculate it is like it is snowing sand in the cabin, I know laugh now . But before you laugh my buddy tried to pull me out 1st with his 2500HD 8.1 and got stuck too.

 

Does anyoone know a easy or any way of getting the sand out of the vent system?

compressed air will get all the sand out.

Short of taking apart the whole system, there may not be much you can do.

 

There is probably sand sitting in the bottom of the blower motor and in the bottom of all the ducting, although only the ducting behind the dash is relevant, as sand blown out the heater vents onto the floor shouldn't be a problem.

 

 

If you're getting a sandstorm whenever you run with Recirc, maybe you can capture a lot of the sand by blocking three of the vents, turning on the shop vac and positioning it in the unblocked vent, then turning on the AC w/ recirc.

 

With three of the vents blocked (perhaps with a rag) you should get more airflow through the remaining vent, disturb more of the sand, and with the assistance of the shopvac, maybe capture most of it. Repeat the procedure for the remaining vents.

 

This would create more airflow through each of the vents than you'd get normally, and so would disturb more sand than you could otherwise. Even though you wouldn't be able to remove ALL the sand, maybe what's left would be stubbornly enough placed in the system that it won't come out later.

 

 

That's a hell of a thing, though - getting sand in the vents. Disassembling the dash to get ALL the venting out and cleaned would be a major hassle. I'll keep it in mind and keep the windows closed.

havent had to much experience with sand (mostly mud) but you could pull off your blower motor tape up your vents and use compressed air to force the sand down n out instead of sucking it up. but you'd need some high pressure air. just a thought. good luck

sand is a pita, it gets everywhere and its impossible to get out, like pfarkas said you would probably have to take apart the whole system, but i would also check the other stuff like bearing and hub seals because sand spells premature death for those parts, good luck
