caprice motor

any info on these engines will help. is it an LT1? 4 bolt main? will I have any problems dropping it in a truck? (the motor will include the wiring harness) and the truck I will put it in currently has the 4.3 v6 w/700r4. also, is it TBI? (if so, will the unti off my truck work?), and what kinda power does it put out?

I'm not sure about the main bolt count, but my guess is 2. It is a TBI 350 identical to what would have been in a 1/2 ton. (Had to be '95 or '96 for the LT1) The TBI unit from you V6 would work, but the injectors would need to be changed and the FICM (brain) needs the 350 chip.

As far as engine swaps go this one would be fairly straight forward, but there are no easy engine swaps. You'll need engine mounts, fan shroud, fan, fan clutch, exhaust system and a bunch of other things I've forgotten from a V-8 truck.

Oh yeah, you asked about power . . . 180 HP was the rating for TBI 350s in Caprices, Roadmasters and Fleetwoods.

By the way, the standard TBI motor in Caprices was a 170 HP 305 . . .I think only the law enforcement versions had 350s.

I don't know what year truck you're planning to put it into, but swapping a 170 HP 305 in place of a 160 HP 4.3 would be a lot of work for not much improvement . . .but at least it'll burn more gas.

93 caprice came with 2 engines LO3 and LO5. LO3 being a 5 liter 305 170hp and 255 torque. LO5 being a 5.7 liter 350 195 hp and I believe 300 torque. With adddition of headers, fastchip and k&n it didn't run too bad. Both engines have 2 bolt mains. Even an LT1 motor on a caprice or impala 94-96 was a 2 bolt. Only f body (Camarao/Transam came with 4 bolt mains) and had 275 hp vs Caprice/Impala LT1 with 260 hp and 330 torque. Depending on what size truck u plan on putting that in, you may want to look into a 454 at least. I have plenty of experience with LT1s in a caprice and Impala, Im gona say its a great motor that does lotsa crazy things, but GM should have put at least a 454 into that B body because it is a heavy car and a small engine has to work harder. I would not put a LO3 or LO5 TBI motor into a truck, unless you plan on just cruising in it. Basically its not a performance motor unlike LT1. But you can make either engine more powerfull by changing internal components like cam, rockers, etc. So it's up to you wether you want to invest into that.

But if you want to know whaat motor you are aabout to pull out of that 93 caprice, look for the 8th charachter. If its "E" then its a 305, if it's "7" then its a 350. 94-96 LT1 motor has letter "P"

I think the motor he's refering to is the GMGoodWrench Pt# 12513151

Its basically identical to the 350 TBI in trucks, only it has higher compression, and a roller cam. It also has the same rotating assembly as an LT1. It has the same 193 swirl port heads as TBI trucks do. You'll probably get the same power if you swapped this engine in as you would in a regular truck TBI 350, but you'd be able to upgrade easier with a roller cam.
