Got my Westers

and this is the first time i got a chance to know what detonation sounds like!!!

i called up lyndon, he told me to run 93 octane gas and a 180 t-stat. well, had the gas in it. not 180 stat! i knew i shoulda done this before!!!

so, headed out to find one..no one here has one. AGAIN!!! so i gave up, went to Good year, and they had a guy who was a parts manager at Carquest, so he knew exactly the right part #. got it to me within an hr. and it was only $10!!! im a happy camper. i'll be switchin it out tommorrow.

but for the WEsters, can't really say much. noticed the speedo is accurate now. really quiet idle. drives nice for now. i actually could feel the performance difference with Westers and stock. but like i said, i couldn't really test her out too hard. as soon as i heard the pinging... got off the gas and slowly proceeded home to switch her back to stock...

i'll post back results soon!!!

Butch, i had no tuning prior to Lyndon's.

a guy on another forum was tellin me that now that i have audible detonation, that it already existed prior to the tune. any ideas on this Butch???

either way, i talked with Lyndon (BTW, AWESOME GUY!!!) and he told me that i will really need to go get a dyno tune and tune my fuel using the fmu. thats about the only thing i can do with the crappy OBS fuel system (d**n U GM!!!)

soo i'll prolly be at the dyno later this week.

any ideas Butch on the detonation issue???

thanks man

On my NBS 6.0L I had detonation for about 1-2 tanks before it went away after I installed my Westers PCM. I'm not sure if that would happen on the OBS trucks though...

AJ,

I know the 96 trucks have a crappy injector system with not much extra flow capacity above stock, and nothing available to fix it either.

If you only got light ping, I think there is a good chance the computer will learn and eliminate it, especially with the 180 stat.

Personally I would make a couple of full throttle runs, backing off only if I heard heavier detonation.

How is your air intake, cold air or underhood air? That will make a big difference too.

I agree you COULD have been getting KR (knock retard) with the stock tune, but it could have been within the range that the knock sensors could handle so you never heard it.

Anyone around your area that has an Autotap or any other real time data recorder? If you could get a data log of a full throttle run, and send it up to Lyndon, he can match the tune to the flow rate of your injectors.

I had the same problem with the Whipple that I had on my 91 GMC, I ended up adding a couple of cans of octane booster or a couple of gallons of 100 octane race gas, that usually keep the pinging down to almost none. I currently run a B&M blower in my Vette too, but that is old school with a distributor and no computer control so it's easy to keep that one ping free!

thanks again guys for the info! very helpful!

since im supercharged, i don't think that the air intake would matter, or would it???

i don't think soo.. good point intruder, i'll ask him about that!

well, i hooked up a scanner to my truck. my air intake temp ranges from 85* when driving to 113*F when at idle... the sensor is placed right after the filter. towards passenger side.. not to mention, i have a big ass intercooler up front to cool the air.

i just found out that Holiday 93 octane gas is more lik 91 octane. so that could be the cause of my pinging.. im going to try and richen it up using the fmu. hopefully that will help..

i think im going to have to talk with lyndon and have him pull some more timing. but i need to get on a dyno and get some data. send it to lyndon, see what he can do...

thanks again guys!
