"Service 4x4" message, solutions?

My truck has done this a few times to me, when it does it none of the push button lights come on and 4x4 isn't available. Now, I can shut the truck off and restart it most of the times, its fine. Any common reasons for this? Btw, I think thats the message it says, "service 4x4," or maybe "Check 4x4."

The fix may be as simple as replacing the switch on the dash...

I agree, Try a new switch first,part #15709327 which lists for $55.95.

Theres even a bulletin on it that says to replace the switch for the "SERVICE 4WD" light if its on.

is the truck still under warranty?

my new silverado z71 did the exact same thing....

i took it in 3 times for that problem, first i was told that the "computer" wasn't programmed correctly at the factory, 2nd time i was told it just needed to be "reset"......third time they actually replaced a sensor that was"reading too high a resistance".

take your pick but, it's not the buttons in your dash.

There is a bulletin on the encoder motor sensor but it effects the'03 model year only,not the '99.

Oh cool, which switch in particular are we talking about? Easy to change? Thanks

The switch is the one on the dash that you use to engage 4wd. All you have to do is take the bezel off and than you can access the switch from there.
