Tire size for 1998 2 wheel drive C1500 truck

Hey guys, I got my truck from my brother and for some reason he liked small bobo tires! They were ok for the time I guess but they are way to tiny for my liking P235-75/15's plus I don't like the look of the truck with them. To skinny! I'm looking for something taller and with more meat on it a little fatter without going over board. What is the biggest tire that will fit on these trucks. OR is there a "sweet spot" size for them? Something that will lift me up a little and make me look good :chevy: Winter is coming and the tread is pretty much done on these. I'm looking for a great all around weather tire and maybe something a little better in the snow as it's only 2 wheel. If you have some pictures of your tires you can share that would be awesome. I saw a truck like mine with some fat tires on it and it looked much better. So help me out here guys!!! thanks in advance!!! here she is..

I had a '97 just like that. I had 235/75/15's on it, thought they looked just right  It is the stock size from the factory for that truck. I put Michilen XCX tires on it, great in the snow, quite on dry pavement, great tire for that truck :chevy:

I'd be concerned about 31's rubbing in a full turn. In a 2wd truck like that, you also want to keep winter traction in mind when looking into new tires. A 31x10.5 won't cut through the snow very well with the light rear end of the truck. A narrower tire like a 235/75 would be ideal. It might just be the color of your truck making it look like the 235's are too small. When I put the XCX's on my '97, they looked alot bigger than the BFG long trails I took off.

I've got 31s on my 2wd. They suck when the road is wet and my foot is heavy, otherwise I really like them. They will fit under the fenderwells, but I went ahead and raised my front end about 2" with a set of coil spacers under the front coils, just to level the truck out. If I still lived in snow country, I'd opt for a set of LT235/85R16LT to get a tall, rather narrow tire to dig through the snow. Flotation tires are bad juju in the snow in my experience.

Are you looking to keep the stock rims? Personally, I wouldn't go taller, but I would go wider. I think I would go with a 255 or 265-70/15. They'll look a bit more aggressive and having that extra contact patch won't hurt. As for tires, you can't beat Michelins. Sure they're a bit pricey, but well worth the dinero!

Thanks for all the input guys!!

357MAG: I've got 15" rims not the 16" I like the coil spacer Idea. The truck sits really low in the front and i'm worried about it being a snow plow once some snow comes down. Do you have a pic you could post with the front up a bit?

How about something like a 30x9.50-15 ? Think that will be a bit taller and look beefy at the same time? I do know I'm going with the Michelins.. I had them before and loved them. You are right.. you pay a bit more but well worth it and they were great in snow. Keep the comments coming guys! Thanks!

I always ran 275/60/r15s on my88-98 2wds. 31s are too tall for a 2wd.

Of course I don't live in snow country, so I wasn't looking for height or snow traction. The 275s would suck in the snow for sure. I also ran 15x 10 wheels. On the stock wheels i like 255s, but again probably too wide for snow.

I have 15x8 Eagle Alloy 5 spokes. The 30" would work well with 15x7 wheels. I had my spacers installed by Glendale Spring in Glendale, Arizona. Price was right around $150 out the door. I had a 72 C10 when I lived in Montana years ago that I did the same thing with the spacers. Never had a problem snowplowing... And I 'd much rather raise the front than lower the rear. I'm a fan of tall tires on pickups, as long as they don't look too stupid, I.E. 44" on a street driven truck. My truck had 275/60x15 BFG when I bought it. They lasted about 3 months. Too low profile for me. I take occasional forays into the desert, so can't abide short tires.

I don't have a digital camera yet, so I can't sendany pics. Sorry. If I can persuade my boss to let me use his, I'll shoot a pic of the front end.

What do you guys think of this tire... Kumho Road Venture AT KL-41 31x10.5sr-15 Looks great in the snow! It's also taller and not real wide but has a nice tread. Looks like it might be a little noisey but then again the Flowmaster exhaust I have will drown that out :lurk: Here is the link for Tire Rack and more info on it... Let me know what you guys think! http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?ti...enture+AT+KL-41

That would be a great tire, just one size smaller. I think the 31's are going to be too wide for winter driving with a 2wd. 30x9.5-15 would be as big as I'd go.

I thought the same thing as you. When I went to my tire guy today he told me the 30x9.5-15 is the same height as the 235/75-15's that are already on there? :lurk::jester: So that's why he suggested that size. I wish I could find a good chart that shows you the different tire sizes and heights! :flag:

www.tirerack.com or www.tires.com has a feature buried in the site to compare specs of different tires and sizes. I haven't been there for a while so can't tell you where it is, but I've used it in the past.

Good hunting

I recently bought new tires for my 04 silverado. It came factory with 235/75/16....after much research I bought 265/70/16 Firestone Destination LE tires......great tires....quiet, smooth and best of all CHEAP. They fit nicely in the wheelwells....cant say enough good things about them.

BTW nice looking truck. :lurk:

    • I’m definitely interested to hear the end result here.
    • My 2025 Silverado 1500 had to receive a brand-new engine (long block) under warranty last month at only around 16,500 miles. Before the replacement, the truck repeatedly displayed "Engine Oil Level Low" warnings, even though the Oil Life Monitor still showed around 50% remaining after about 6,000 miles since my last oil change. After seeing the warning several times, I checked the dipstick with the engine cold, and the oil level was completely normal. The next day, the message escalated to "Add Engine Oil." At first, I assumed it was just a faulty oil level sensor, so I brought the truck to the dealership. After inspecting the engine, they found internal cylinder wall scoring and ultimately replaced the entire long block under warranty. Before this happened, I was planning to install a 4-inch lift and suspension upgrade on my truck. After needing a new engine at just 16,500 miles, I honestly don't see the point anymore. I also contacted GM to ask whether my vehicle qualified for a buyback, but I was informed that it does not at this time. Anyway, this experience has left me with serious concerns about the long-term reliability of this engine. I sincerely hope NHTSA expands the current investigation or recall to include 2025 model and performs a thorough inspection of affected vehicles. My biggest concern is that these engines may fail shortly after the powertrain warranty expires. If GM truly stands behind this engine, then at the very least, please consider extending the powertrain warranty to 10 years for affected owners. That would go a long way toward restoring customer confidence.
    • Without exception but then I'm the odd duck, right? I know what goes into that test, how it is calculated and thus how to beat it. But EPA values are often not beaten by the general public and the government has in past years adjusted the means and methods to come to those values to more closely approximate "Joe Average".    The only real trick to beating that EPA average is don't drive like "Joe Average".    It's the same method you used to profit from "Economic Migration" and in doing so beat the 'stats'. But you, like me, are not "Joe Average".     The thing you don't seem to grasp is this "Purchasing Power Index" isn't forward looking. It doesn't predict what it going to be but looks backward and states what it was. They are not telling us what the THINK, they are telling us what they MEASURED. Example:    Wife says "I'm going to lose 40 pounds by Christmas". May she does, maybe she doesn't but the doctors office who weighed her when she made that statement and again at Christmas only REPORTS what the RESULT was. You and I can banter about what was possible and what aunt Tilly did till the cows come home but the result is the result. Arguing otherwise is.....irrational. That's all I'm saying. This isn't about:      What you are calling a 'Statistic' is a RESULT not a CALCUATION and as a result the RULE. Like gravity as a rule, it can not be broken.
    • Just wanted to say thank you for posting this. Years later, your thread is still helping Silverado owners.   I bought my 2025 Silverado 1500 in January 2025, and I've had what feels like the exact same rattle since day one. After reading your findings, I believe my truck has the same issue with the cable carrier contacting the rear sliding window. To be honest, I had pretty much given up on pursuing the issue. It wasn't until I recently drove another brand's pickup that I realized just how quiet their cabin was—and how noisy mine has been all along. On my truck, the rattle happens on almost any paved road, gets even worse on rougher pavement, and I can even hear it during braking and acceleration.   I actually referenced your thread when submitting my case to GM, hoping they'll recognize this as a recurring issue instead of treating it as an isolated incident. The reason I reached out to GM first is because my dealership told me they would need to keep the truck for at least two days just to diagnose the problem. I was concerned that even after two days, they still might not be able to identify the source of the rattle before giving the truck back to me. I had also asked a few dealerships about this issue during previous service visits, but none of them seemed to know what was causing it or had a solution. That's why I decided to contact GM directly first, hoping they might already have an official repair procedure or guidance for this issue.   I also hope GM eventually comes up with an official fix for this problem. I have a feeling there are many Silverado owners experiencing the same rattle, but most either choose to live with it or simply don't know what the cause is.   Really appreciate you taking the time to document your diagnosis. Your post is still making a difference years later.
