westers on a duramax

Does anyone out there have a westers tune on their duramax. I'm trading my 6.0 in and getting an '04 with the d/a combo. I have the westers tune on the 6.0 but I'm just curious how it compares to the others out there on the diesel.

Hi -

Give it a shot. You get some type of credit with Westers when changing vehicles, right? Personally, I would go with the Edge Juice or Quadzilla on a Duramax - both companies are a proven leader in the diesel community for some time. Regardless of my opinion, I would use that credit for the Westers instead of just letting it go idle.

Lyndon did a 100HP tune a guy with a Duramax a little while ago and his gas mileage went from 19.5 to 26, along with the big boost in power and torque. Call Lyndon and talk to him about it. You have Wester's lifetime full price credit from your 6.0 anyway!

Are you getting a LLY? He is just finishing up the tuning for those too. Ask him about the H2/Duramax/Allison he just finished!!

Great, now instead of seeing you for the first thirty feet and then you're just a blur ahead of me, all we'll see is a smile at the stoplight and then something like you see when Marty McFly takes off in "Back to the Future"! You're really sure you want that Westers? I driven several of the Duramaxes and they've got gobs more power than the 6.0....you might drive it for a while and discover you don't need a Westers - IMO.

I put the 50HP tune on my dad's '01 D/A 2500HD 4x4 CC w/ 285s. He gained over 2mpg and his truck is faster than my truck w/ the 93 hot tune.

I agree those are both proven add-ons for diesel performance and Westers can be just as proven if people are willing to give them a try. The people that do have the Wester diesel tunes are very happy with them as some have stated above. Lyndon can tune the Dmax very well IMO. Sense you have the credit coming from your current tune I would see no reason not to go with the Westers. You will probably be evem more impressed with the diesel tune...

It would save some cash to go with westers. But I sure like the idea of being able to swap levels, and see all of the vitals with the attitude. Plus I think the Juice will back off if the tranny starts to slip. I plan on keeping this truck for a long time, I don't want to mess anything up.

Duffy, the PCM will back off engine power if the Allison senses slipping. Doesn't matter what you have, Edge, Wester's Hypertech, whatever, the PCM takes care of that.

Not entirely correct - the Edge Hot Juice backs off power to the engine only until it reaches the normal operating temp. I can limp my Allison in 5th gear all day long with my Hot Juice. Another thing to note is that the Diablow Predator doesn't offer any DMAX / Allison safeguards...I don't know about Hypertech, though

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
