Fluids on 4x4

Hey everyone.

I was wondering which fluids should I use in the front and rear diffs as well as transfer case. How often do I have to change those type of fluids. I am missing a manual so this is the alternate and a better information source. Thanks.

I have the GM service manual infront of me right now:

They don't call for any fluid changes for the differntials (they state to just check level and add as necessary). Fluids: Front 80W-90, Rear 75W-90 synthetic.

Transfer case: I am getting ready to do mine tomorrow (this is why I have the manual out), it's supposed to be changed every 50k miles. I assume that you have the same transfer case as mine (NVG 263), this one takes 2 quarts of Dexron III.

I am changing mine over to Mobil 1 synthetic ATF.

Do regular auto parts stores sell these fluids like autozone or pepboys, or is it like a special order thing. Im pretty new to the 4x4 scene and the entire truck scene period.

I wanna change all the fluids including ally flush. I did find allison fluid for 35 bucks per gallon for transynd here locally. Is that expensive?

You should be able to find the fluids locally. At least here in NC the Auto Zone has a good selection.

 

AMSOIL makes a direct replacement for the Transynd fluid. If your interested let me know and I can get you a price delivered to your door.

Local Autoparts stores cary the fluids, I bought my Mobil 1 ATF at the Autozone.

$35.-/gal is pretty high. Our local Allison dealer sells 5 gal. for around $130.-.

My next project for the 75'000 mi service is to change my transmission fluid to synthetic, also, but I will use Mobil 1 as well which is also OK to use in the Allison.

Make sure that if you are going to buy any Allison spin-on filters to buy them from an Allison dealer (not GM). The Allison dealer charges about 1/2 (approx. $9.-).
