Right Side Front Brakes Burning

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a 2000 GMC Savana 2500 Cargo van with the stock brake system front disk/rear drum. I noticed that the right front brake was burning so I thought that the calipers needed to be changed. I changed them with reman calipers and bled the hydraulic system. However, today I noticed that the problem hasn't gone away. After heavy braking I notice a lot of smoke coming from the right front tire and it smelled like the brake pad material. So I wanted to know if anyone had this problem or if anyone knew how to fix it. Could it be the rotors?? Or could it be the brake pads? I use Bendix Semi-Metallic brake pads P/N MKD369 for the front. There is also brake squeal from the right side front brakes.

Thanks,

Hi,

Thanks For the feedback, It pulls to right I slam on the brakes. The brake pad wear on both sides used to be pretty even until burning problem started. However, as I mentioned in my first post, I replaced the calipers with remans (CARDONE brand) when I first noticed the burning problem (2 weeks ago). I wonder if it has something to do with the hydro system since ABS isn't working.

Unlikely, but could be a collapsed brake line.

Did you inspect, clean or change the pins that the caliper 'floats' on? If they are gunked/rusted up, etc. they will not let the caliper center itself during and after braking. And, yes, you can install a 'bad' pin with no problem. (Done it on the T/A) You do not have to take the whole thing apart to find out. Just unscrew one pin, inspect, clean or replace it and then do the other. Make sure to lightly lube the sliding part of the pin with a good high temp grease before re-installing.

Hope that's all it is!

The slide pin idea sounds about right...also, do the pads move freely in the saddle (caliper bracket)? If the pads are tight in the caliper bracket they can drag on the rotor and will heat up like you described.

Had a similar problem on an Audi once. The master cylinder was sticking, not falling back all the way, and not uncovering the vent hole. The fluid would expand and have nowhere to go ... applying more and more force on the pads.

New MC fixed it, and with the old one, I could barely move the piston by hand.

could this be my problem?

Im at 53,000 miles and Have a major issue.

I have a 2004 silverado. The brakes are staying on all the time, enough to keep the truck from moving in gear.Unless I apply alot of gas, to do 50mph im at like 2400rpm which is way to high usually fourth and low 2000rpm... It was comming and going but today its been on all day. got to take it in but wondering if anyone has heard of this or knows how to fix it.

Does it need to be bleed or somthing? what kind of brake fluid do you use? how do you change it?

thank you for anyhelp

thanks for no help anyone.

Being a dick about it won't exactly get you more responses. Less attitude generally works a lot better on this board, especially when it is the first few posts you put up.

I would start by cleaning and greasing the caliper slides.

Is it possible that the left brake is frozen causing all the stoping work to be done by the right, overheating it. Might be, you replaced the right caliper and the problem remains. I would check the left for a frozen caliper disabling it. the symptoms fit.
