Drop in gas mileage after adding K&N Filter

My mileage initially did not improve, then after a short time (>500 miles) the mileage went up slightly, about 1 mpg. I believe that the PCM needed time to compensate for the different flow characteristics.

I have noticed 1/2 mile to 1 mile per gallon drop in my gas mileage since I added a K&N air filter, the gain in power is ok, but I would prefer the  better gas mileage. Has anyone else experienced the same thing?

My initial thought is if you have noticed the increase in HP and a drop in gas mileage, you have been enjoying the increase in HP a little too much.

.5 MPG loss or more is A L O T. I would be pi$$ed. The freeer flowing design should make it equal to stock or MAYBE .1 MPG better.

Maybe when you changed the filter you disconnected the Temperature Sensor or maybe the intake pipe is loose after the MAF or near the throttle body.

Did you do anything else at the same time?

A lot of guys descreen the MAF and then learn it was a bad idea because it kills gas mileage.

When I put mine in I gained/lost nothing, plus at the same time I modded the airbox with a "poor-man's" cold air induction kit. No gain, no loss, but I never have to replace the filter!

Are you sure you're not just 'trying out' the added horsepower a little too much? I noticed that when I added my FIPK II my foot got a little heavier because I like to hear the cool noise it makes at full throttle. Even with that I didn't notice any difference in MPG. Maybe if I eased up a little I'd see some gains. Just my $0.02

WOW when we put the K&N in ares we got about 3-5 better but we got cold air intake from k&n

3-5 MPG inprovement just by adding the CAI????? That factors out to 66-110 Miles MORE per tank full on an average of 22 gallons fuel. Right now my average is 310 miles per tank full when the low fuel light comes on. If you are correct, my $250 investment would bring me anywhere between 376 or an AMAZING 420 miles per tank full.

Are you sure you got a 3-5 MPG improvement? Switching from conventional to synthetic oil in the engine gained me .6 MPG. I can't believe the stock intake would be so restrictive it would hold back 3-5 MPG. Please tell me your math is right.

Well lets look at it this way: The K&N is a freeer flowing unit, but at the same time, an engine is nothing more than an air pump. More air in, more fuel in. When you add mods like this to your truck, you will probably expirence a drop in fuel milage. If you are like me and you did other mods at the same time that increase the HP, the milage will drop. I have the K&N, TBI spacer, 1.6:1 rockers and dual Flow masters. my milage sucks (about 13 MPG) but it sure does get out of it's own way on the road (and sounds good doing it).

Then there is the other side, add HP mods and you tend to use them.

 The sign is because it was posted in another thread but applies to this one. Thanks to the guys at the diesel page for this great write up on air filters Air Filters

To those of you running your rigs until the low fuel light comes on just plan on buying an expensive fuel pump early as the fuel in the tank keeps the pump cool. Just under a 1/4 tank is a good time to fill up.
